Hood Swap?

Hello Front Rangers, or anyone else that might be interested!

I am purchasing my first 4Runner next week from a dealership near Denver, Colorado. It's a new black 2015 TEP.

First: I have been reading posts on this board for some time, and I appreciate all of the time and effort many of you have spent to put so much good information (and photos!) online. Thank you!

My question: I think the hood scoops are cool, I just think I might be a bit too old-fashioned (that's probably not the correct word), or too much of an accountant to really appreciate the scoop as much as I should, so I was wondering if anyone out there might be interested in swapping hoods?

Front what I've read on here, it seems like the hoods on the TEP and the SR5/Limited should be compatible. Is this correct?

Also, I would prefer to swap with someone that has a similarly new black 4Runner to ensure that the color matches quite well and that there shouldn't be any dings / scratches / etc. on either hood.

Please let me know if I am missing anything, or if you might be interested in a swap.

I doubt you'll have trouble finding someone who wants to swap. Honestly the dealer might even do it so they can "upsell" an SR5.

Wow, that is the first time I have ever heard of someone wanting to swap a hood scooped hood for a non hood scooped hood.

I guarantee you if you really want to do that, you will have zero problem finding somebody.

If you have ever driven into the sun in the early morning or late afternoon you might understand why someone would not want that useless hood scoop.

I hate mine, but I do not want anyone else's hood. I have a piece of cardboard that I keep between the seat and console and I put it up on the dash when the sun is blinding me from the scoop.

Nothing a creative application of Plasti-Dip can't fix (or professional matte black/grey paint if you want to be fancy.) A lot of "trail" vehicles are sporting that look because of glare issues on even non-scooped hoods.

Exactly what I'm planning to do, to mitigate the glare issue.

I'm getting some measurements on mine to get a 3d part printed so I can run a light bar there. That's what I tell myself anyway. Yet to get my hood scanned.

That's the idea but the newer hood scoop is this unfortunate plastic insert that would be much harder to get a clean look with than the nice aluminum mesh and the metal structure Toyota used to use hwell: It's all plastic now. So I would need something soloid to mount oo and also the ability tget a clean look on the plastic... Although that workup makes me wonder if I could't just frame it with real mesh... Hmmm. You've given me some new direction I could take...

I'm not a fan of the hood scoop on the 4Runner, but I'm over 40 and boring.

the scoop is why I decided to get an SR5. Drove a white TE and the glare was crazy. Sure you can wrap it but the hood flutter was annoying. Has anyone cut the underside to actually make it a functional scoop?

Thought about wrapping mine, but I can't wrap the car in front of me. Point is, will still have glare in the morning.

Here's a pic of the current design with a costco card for scale. The "grill" height is is maybe 3/4", prob closer to 1/2". So I need to replace the entire bezel I think.

I wonder if you could just use the plastic as a rear mount for the light bar with a little steel backing for rigidity. I had thought about poking bare LEDs through the plastic, but then you need some sort of protective weather cover for rain and bugs.

I don't see how you are going to make that work. I spent hours trying to figure out how to get a light bar in there. The opening is just too narrow. Only way I can see it working is if you cannibalize a light bar all to hell. Then you run into waterproofing problems, and heat dissipation issues.

Hope you prove me wrong- it's gonna be a tough one!
