Horn Issue need asssistance

Didnt even notice this problem until recently. Whenever I push down on the horn and release it continues to beep even though I am not applying any pressure to the horn. I double checked around the plug and even unpluged it while it was beeping and it continued to beep. The only way to stop the horn was to reset the computer at the battery or to remove the fuse which I have done, which is causing other issues such as me being unable to use my windshield wiper spray, and unable to use rear window winshield wiper. I would be willing to put the fuse back in just afraid that in the heat of the moment while driving Ill hit the horn and :target: then FML. Has anyone experienced anything like this and what was there solution for repair. I am under warranty for sure and willing to take truck in for troubleshooting and repair. Though the dealer is over an hour away and if they have to keep it over ight that could be an issue since we only, have one vehocle at this time. Thanks ahead of time for your assistance.

Call the dealer, set up an appt for first thing in the AM, tell them you only have one vehicle and you will be waiting and need to have it fixed that day....
Shouldn't be an all day thing.....

Any heavy water crossings or rain recently? It may be possible there is some moisture on the horn itself that is causing it to read a short (closed switch). You grazing the button may just be giving it enough current to hold contact when it kicks in. Unplug the horn under the hood and spray some WD-40 or Electro-clean on the plug and contacts. Other than that I am clueless.

Hi Doc,

The next time the horn remains engaged after being released... try pulling the 'Horn Rly' from the base located in the main fuse/relay box under the hood (should shut off right away); "See schematic diagram":



I have a feeling that the original horn relay carriage is hanging up when in the Closed position. To avoid taking the truck back to the dealership and leaving it with them, you can likely get this relay at autozone for $12 bucks; just take the old one with you to be sure that they match it up properly! Best!

I too suspect a faulty relay. Sounds like once tripped it sticks. Find the relay and swap with another one from the panel that will work. Try the horn and if it stops go buy a relay at the store. GL.

Ill try the relay. Wasnt even thinking in that direction, dont know where my head is. I was caught up in the compustar remote start I added to the vehicle causing it. Though, it is not connected to the horn at all.

Now the alarm when it honks the horn it will go off and then stop, is this the same relay? If so wouldnt it the first time it went off not stop if this was the issue as well?

I do this anyway. Ask my wife drives her crazy I got the PTSD bad! So suprosed I havent ever gotten into a fight over this type of stuff. I usually calm down when I remember I am carrying. And my service dog swats at me with her paw when I act uo to let me know to calm the heck down.

Not the horn button. Have unhooked at the horn connector in steering column while going off. If it was the button it would have stopped going off. No water crossing or anything of the such.

Okay, but I meant under the hood at the horn itself, not the button. It sounds like something is causing the circuit to stay active after you release the button, so I was thinking some crud at the horn connector itself.

Yes... the very same relay that reacts to the horn button on the steering wheel when pressed, also responds to the signal from the 'Main Body ECU' when summoning the security system (horn) alarm; "See the diagram below":



Notice at the bottom of the diagram, the 'Horn switch' (above ^^^^) on the steering pad assembly. Now see the Blue Trace that goes all the way up to the Horn relay? Notice that the same line is shared by the Main Body ECU right where the Blue and the Pink dotted traces come together. **I seriously doubt that a short circuit has anything to do with this trouble. And because short circuiting issues are 'usually', intermittent and/or unpredictable by nature, this glitch doesn't really fit the profile; this system is behaving exactly like a Typical, temperamental, sticking relay or similar Hardware issue ...even the horn switch (in steering wheel) can stick.

Dude, thanks for the ideas. To be honest I havent even had time to troubleshoot it yet. My wife and I are painting the deck and I have to have it done by next week as we are looking to pick up a boat and dont want to spend my whole summer doing honey do lists. I should look at it some time later this week. Should be done with our deck in a few days.

I looked in my 2012 handbook but I doubt that the manual will locate/identify that relay; Toyota won't want 'lay people' fooling around under the hood, especially if the vehicle is still under warranty! Best thing to do is: (1) Leave the engine turned off. (2) Disconnect the horns (sounders). (3) Have someone hit the horn button on the steering wheel... The relay will start clicking like there's no tomorrow; pull that one... If you have any trouble locating it, I'll find it in my truck tomorrow and post that info here. Rgds!

Thanks I will domthat I did pull a relay in the under engine fuse box marked as horn no go that is when I asked I will look again when I get a chance. It Didmt cross my mind to unhook the horn and listen for the relay lol.

Ok when horn goes off it is constant not intermittent like an alarm ie honk, honk , honk... It is hooooooooooooooo... So with tha said I still pulled the connection at the horn and set it off. No relay noise as it is only a constant on and couldnt here the relay engage. When I tried before to pull a realay I thought it was no go. Anyone have an ID on the horn relay with a picture of the location?

Once you locate the relay try tapping on it. If it's stuck, tapping may free it up. It's likely to stick again but it will get you by for a while.

If i can get help finding the relay it and it is the issue it is way to easy to just replace the darn thing. I can reset the unit just by reseting power from the battery.

Remember that there are 2 horns under the hood. Your alarm horn sits by the air box. The traffic horn sits behind the grill.

With the after market alarm, are you sure about which horn they tied into? Think along the line of the horn when you honk it, setting off the alarm which causes the horn to honk.

Should be a marking under the cover of the fuse panel that indicates what relay sits where. You're looking for one of the bigger blocks in there if I recall correctly (not near my truck to verify.)
