HOT REAR DRUM Help..

The e-brake cable engages the bellcrank which is connected to a short cable that ends on something called the automatic adjusting lever which is the piece that the star wheel engages. The same lever engages the shoes. If the shoes don't hit the drum, the lever moves far enough that the star wheel is turned one click. If the shoes hit the drum, it can't move that far, and the star wheel stays where it is.

Here is a pic of it:

That U on the brass plate at the top are the two arms that move the star wheel pawl. It's a one-way ratchet, it can tighten but not loosen. That cable on the bottom connects to the e-brake.

Traditional drum setups don't work that way. But our Toyotas do. Each pull on the e-brake will give you one click on the star wheel until the shoes are right.

Do you use your ebrake to adjust your rear brakes after you put it all together? i understand thats how its supposed to work i just dont have much faith in those self adjusters. My neighbors must think im crazy slamming on the brakes in reverse and yanking up on the ebrake dozens of times trying to get a better pedal :)

Having the ebrake adjusted properly is key to having its operation keep the auto adjuster tensioned properly. If you don't have enough travel on the ebrake it won't happen. There is a gap setting you make with the bolt on each. It takes up the free play.

After I finally got around to doing this the brake pedal travel stays short. And so far they have been staying adjusted.

I think braking in reverse may also operate the lever the turns the star adjuster.

As I said, the reverse part is unnecessary. Yes, the book way is to get it close with the star wheel when you assemble, and finish with the e-brake. That said, the stinking things don't always work so sometimes you have to do it all with the star wheel backstabbing through the backplate, which is a pain, but works. As he said above, adjusting the bellcrank gap is key.
