How capable is my 07 4runner Sport?

So here's the rundown.

My wife drives our 07 4runner sport V6 while i drive my Xterra Off Road as my DD. The Zoh only comes out once in a while.

We want to get a bigger vehicle. So we're toying with the idea of getting a Sequoia.

One of the trucks would get traded in. I"m not worried about the miles on the either vehicle as they are 07 (4runner) and 08 (Xterra) and the milage is close.

I LOVE the 4runner. it's bigger, much more comfy, and has more options that i like vs the Xterra being pretty basic.

The only thing the X has is that it's rugged as hell. I can slam it into anything i want and going off road (especially with the rear locker) it's virtually impossible to stop. I don't go crazy off roading, but i do dabble from time to time in some mud or brush. no big adventures, but I def like to play.

One thing i've always had an issue with on the 4runner is the fact that i can't turn the traction control off. I feel like it's a big negative going off road with the 4runner. i know that i can lock the center diff and the VDC will go off at that point, but i've heard unless the circumstances are absolutely horrible not to do it. If anyone wants to chime in on that please do......do you guys lock your center diff often?

If i keep the 4runner i will probably put 32" AT tires on it and a mild lift. Probably the toytec 3" springs.

I really really really want to keep my 4runner and trade the X. I like the 4runner on road WAY more than the X. But at the same time, the capability factor off road plays a big part in my decision.

Let me know what you guys think. Maybe some of the guys with 07's who do a lot of off roading can comment.

I lock my center diff as soon as my 4R leaves the pavement. It is safe to drive it that way and it turns the VSC off.

Both the Xterra and 4R are great off-road. Having the rear locker with the Xterra is nice but having ATRAC front and rear on the 4R is a nice feature too. It should come down to which vehicle you like better overall. As far as resale and long-term reliability goes, I would lean toward the 4R.

With 32's and Toytec the T4R will be great and the X, while very cool, won't be missed. ARB makes a nice locker if you decide you need one. The ATRAC on the T4R is very good. It's not a locker but it's pretty damn good if you practice with it a bit. Learn how to use it...

Not an X but my Nissan experience with their version of ATRAC wasn't so good. My Titan had it and it was very weak compared with the ATRAC. Thankfully I had the locker. Again, I don't know about the X but in my Titan when the locker was engaged the front ABLS wouldn't work on the front axle so you had true 3wd. The ATRAC on the T4R strives to give true 4wd all of the time.

Within the 1st three posts of this thread there's some awesome ATRAC in action vids and you'll see what T4R can/can't do.

4th gens ATRAC is very good - not quite as good as having a rear locker IMO but it's close. You probably already know this but the key to getting the best out of ATRAC is to lock the center diff thereby turning off VSC, leaving ATRAC on. While VSC computer can cut your throttle, ATRAC does not. So by locking the center diff you automatically disable VSC which prevents the computer from killing your throttle and therefore your momentum. This leaves ATRAC to apply the brakes as the computer sees fit to get best traction - you just have to remember to be generous with the throttle at times to overcome the braking action of ATRAC.

With a lift and some meaty AT tires the 4th gen is excellent off-road. My GX has same system and you can see from the links in my sig where it got several off-roader of the year awards. What I'd really like is the '09 T4R trail editioni with the rear locker and ATRAC - that would be damn near unstoppable. Only thing arguably better than that stock would be a Jeep Rubicon or Mercedes G Wagon with front and rear lockers.

I just can't wait till i'm back in the drivers seat and out of my Xterra. Not that i don't like the Xterra......but it's just not the same.

I used to have a t-bar lifted xterra on 32 bfg at's. Now I have the 4r sport with daystar lift and 32" revos. The 4r is such a better vehicle. I do not miss my X one bit!

I'd keep the 4runner, if for no other reason for the value...they hold their value so much better than Nissans...

I like both vehicles so its a tough call.....if you were comparing the 4runner to anyhting else it would be easy....but it pretty much comes down to the 4Runner being larger and more capable than the X...you'll love having the 4Runner/Sequoia combo.....

No different here, trade that X! There is more than enough aftermarket support out there to make your 4runner even better than the X if you need it.

I've driven all 3 before, I'd rate the Sequoia the dead last, for me, it feels like driving a mini van only the 3rd row seats are smaller.

As of right now my to do list on the 4runner is:

Daystar 2.5/1.5
Spidertrax wheels spacers
BFG AT/KO 265/70/17
HID's in the low beams and fogs

Some kinda head unit incorporating Nav, Blu Tooth, and XM. Not sure which one though (if anyone has any suggestions feel free to offer them as i'm not a very big audio guy)

I think that'll make the truck a little more fun.
