How dark is the rear privacy glass on 4thgens?

I have been pulled over in the past for tint on my previous vehicle. Back then I was dating a girl who had a cop as a relative so he signed off on the fix it ticket without me removing the tint.

I want to paly by the rules this time around. My tint law is 50% for front sides and 35% for rear sides and back window.

However the rear windows are already darker with factory privacy glass so if I go 35% which is legal for the back, won't I actually be darker than that because of the darker privacy glass?

I don't know of any shops that actually have the little guns the cops use to test the tint level and I really don't want to go to the police station and ask them to check... that is just looking for trouble even if I haven't done anything wrong yet!

I would think that any reputable shop would have a tool to measure the percentage. Maybe I'm wrong though.

If you tint the rear windows, it will be a lot darker because of the already installed privacy glass.

It sounds like you are in Va. The tint laws there are the same as the ones you listed. If you are in Va, remember that the rear passenger windows are the only ones that fall in the 35% range and the front passenger window fall under the 50% range. The rear gate window, and the rear cargo area windows can be as dark as you wish.

I'm in WI. Unless I miss read the law, everything on the back half including rear window is 35%. I'll double check though.

Thanks for the link. I didn't see that thread when I searched earlier otherwise I wounldn't have started this thread.

According to the link the rear privacy glass is already somewhere in the nieghborhood of 25% which means I really shouldn't go darker since the law requires 35%. I know it it is legal since it came from the factory that way, but I guess I won't add any tint than.

I know the 50% up front won't match the rear, but it is better than nothing.

no your right, in WI the rears must be 35% or more and the fronts are 50%.


im lucky. in az no one cares how dark it is. if you dont have tint your crazy.
