How did I screw up my rear shock install?

So I tried to replace the original shocks last night on my 01 4runner with replacement OEM ones. So yesterday I tried to do the rear ones, thought it went smoothly, did a 1 mile shake down, it was make a noise, came back and right rear side was noticeably taller.

I park it overnight, check it out today, and the right rear shock has now mounting hold large enough the bolt could slide through.

When I removed the old rear shock, I didn't feel any washer or bushing on the top side of the mounting bracket. So just did the nut there directly. I couldn't fit a torque wrench up there so I just wedged the ratchet wrench against the body and twisted the shock as good as I could, same as taking it off.

It's hard to tell from your photo and description, but do you have any washers or bushings in there? On the stud on the top of the rear shock, you should have a washer at the bottom of the stud followed by a bushing, then another washer. That all sits below the mounting bracket. Then when you put the stud through the hole you put another bushing on the stud followed by one more washer and then finally the nut goes on the stud and gets tightened down.

I have the washer / bushing / washer directly on top of the shock.

I don't have any washers or bushings on top of the mounting bracket, just the nut.

My kit did come with a bushings I didn't use, one is 90948-01003...

I guess I just need to run to mclendon's and get a washer. Hopefully they have something that will work, unless the washer is common enough the Toyota's part dept. at my local dealer would have it?

I don't have any washers or bushings on top of the mounting bracket, just the nut.

My kit did come with a bushings I didn't use, one is 90948-01003...

I guess I just need to run to mclendon's and get a washer. Hopefully they have something that will work, unless the washer is common enough the Toyota's part dept. at my local dealer would have it?

I'm struggling to find part numbers for the washers. The washers are a specific shape and server to center the shock. You will want to get the correct ones. There are people on here much more gifted than I am at hunting down part numbers, so one of them may be able to help you. Otherwise, I would try the parts counter at your local dealership and see if they can find the part number for you. Even as a dealer part they should be very cheap, and I would think they are a part that was used across multiple cars and they may have in stock already.

90948-03020 comes up when I search "centering washer" on Camelback Toyota, and it calls it a "shock washer".

This is a useful thread with the part numbers. Spartacus gave you one of the part numbers, but there are actually 2 separate washers that you need. That thread has both of them and the proper order for putting them in.

You're definitely gonna want the correct retaining washers, as they're made to fit with the bushings and keep them in place properly and keeps them from getting damaged unnecessarily. Centering washers you can get away with using whatever fits/is big enough, or use none at all - I had to skip them with my Tokico Blacks as they gave me no room to thread the nut on, like not a single thread. What shocks are those, specifically? They kinda look like Blacks from the pics and I have the p/n if so (90948-02144)
