How did you mount your mini tablet?

I have a new 8" Android tablet for GPS that I'm trying to mount. I found the Ram X-Grip thread but want to see how others are doing it, I'm trying to find a cheaper option.


I ordered a cheap magnet mount to try, I have no idea if it will be strong enough but it was a $3 amazon add-on so I'm going to try.

How did you mount your mini tablet?

I'm using the X-GRIP for my iPod mini. It works out well, and I don't regret the spend. Also stoked the mount does not require any additional holes and/or modifications to the vehicle.
 
I got some angled pieces of metal, glued to a tablet case. I measured the distance for the pieces to fit within the cd opening. It works well.. fits over the factory unit... just have to remove to use backup camera.
I went back and forth on using a windshield mount or an x grip off the side. I still may move to an xgrip setup... but this is so low-pro and easy... and cheap. Ive been on trails... hundred of miles of freeways. Havent encountered a problem.
 
I'm on my first road trip in my new '17 LE. Running Waze on an iPad mini 4. I mounted it to a Scosche dash/magnet mount for now. I wanted to test out placement and stability without drilling holes somewhere I won't end up wanting them. The tablet sits horizontally on the little shelf in front of the clock. The magnet mount sits behind it, stuck to the dash, with just enough room to rotate the tablet maybe 5 degrees off center in either direction so my wife can work on it more easily, or I can see it better while driving.

We're not doing any real off roading, just small, rough back roads on the northern California coast, during winter storms.

No problems so far. It hasn't come loose, hasn't fallen off.

If I were planning to take this out in the rocks or mountain climbing, I'd bolt a RAM Mount to the dash, console or passenger side seat bolt to rigidly mount the iPad in a mount it couldn't fall out of...

I can post some pictures of the setup later today.

Not sure yet if this will be the final solution, but it's working really well for this use case.

I custom mounted a 1" RAM ball (diamond mount plate) to a piece of interior trim (the vertical piece for the temperate control) and then I use a long RAM arm, a double ball connector to then join it to a short ram arm, which connects to a life proof cradle for my ipad air (I had a spare ipad I wasn't using). There's photos in my thread I believe.

I was playing around with that spot but i think it blocks my vision too much.

I may just do this and mount on the flat part there in front of the clock then position the tablet partially in front of the vents to get it a little lower in my field of view

I'm not sure the gooseneck flex mounts get the tablet high enough over my cell phone which i have on the center console in front of the shifter on a proclip mount

I just try not to think about it. I've tried looking for pics or videos of how the A pillar airbags deploy but haven't had much luck. If anyone has that I'd be interested in seeing it.

I've seen the results of a cell phone mounted on the a pillar during a crash. It basically turned into a missle. Also having friends who are EMTs who send you crash photos while you're eating dinner are especially cruel and twisted.

Yikes. I think that could happen with just about anything that's mounted in front of you though, no matter what mount you're using. I'd be more concerned with a phone that's just on a magnetic mount than this proclip I'm using.

I found a video of a 2014 crash test. I was mostly concerned with how much that plastic cover moves when the airbags deploy. It doesn't look like it moves much at all honestly.
