How did you mount your mini tablet?

My Delorme, which is mounted to the windshield, has it's screen turned off (it's barely like 1.5" by 1.5", tiny anyways) and I use the ipad to control it's function (it's basically a satellite transceiver).

This. I want to know more. Is there an app that you are using to connect to the Delorme? Which Delorme are you using? I wan to do a similar setup with my iPad Mini 2. I debated changing out the head unit instead of updating my maps, but I would rather use what I already have and put money to much more "needed" upgrades.

the airbag won't touch it, unless its resting against or right beside the a pillar the a pill won't touch it. the a pillar only pushes out enough for the airbag to come out

a suction mount is going to come off in an accident regardless though

The inReach uses their earthmate app, which you can use for messaging, etc. Makes it so you can type out longer messages without taking a time machine back to pre-smart phone era text entry. I use the SE, the yellow one, because the deluxe model is kind of dumb once you realize the screen and GPS maps on a 1" screen are absurdly useless.

I used to use a SkyPro XGPS 160 to receive GPS information, but once I realized by accident that the inReach actually receives and provides GPS data via bluetooth I could eliminate a device in the cab. Only downside is you need the Delorme subscription active or it won't work, and you can only sync to one device at a time, so you can't pair an iphone and an ipad in tandem.

I actually have started putting my iphone in my jacket, as I find myself distracted more often than not on long road trips. I use the iPad for satellite messaging and I pre-cache a lot of map data so when I go to parts of Oregon I can use google maps offline.

the pillar is going to displace at the the same rate as the airbag inflates. It may only move a few inches, but it will move that distance quickly.

yes, a suction mount is going to let go. But generally speaking, it is never a good idea to put stuff in a position to get additional momentum imparted by an airbag deployment.

iPad is trail navigation and backroads comms, HAM radio, and the delorme is basically the modem. If I could eliminate one of those devices effectively I would in fact pair stuff down.

Removing the center console is simple enough, just start yanking at an angle. Yank hard enough that you think it will break and then yank just a little bit more.

And I would strongly suggest a backing plate to keep everything solid. I used a piece of aluminum we had laying around.

I usually hook my fingers inside the "fabric" boot around the transfer case lever, i.e forward passenger side, and get that edge up and work around with my fingers evenly.

My biggest suggestion is put some painters tape, a few layers, in that small gap between the center console storage box and the edge of the center console cover you're trying to remove. Because when you pull up the console cover will usually scratch the shit out of the "black" plastic and the tape prevents that on removal or installation. You'll also need to disconnect the main connector for the switches once you get all the clips out and can pull up on the trim piece.

First unscrew and remove the shifter. Then if sitting in the driver seat pull from left to right, if I remember correctly. The 4WD knob is attached below with a connector but the wires are not that long so when its loose, don't pull it off until undoing the connector.

Never hurts I guess but I've been in my center console more times than Pat has been in Antman and never used anything and had zero scratches.

Not all the pieces fit together the same on all trucks, mine is extremely tight between those and kept tearing up that piece.

I feel the same way about the inReach, I looked seriously at them, it is a great idea, yet still can't get over the device design itself, its horrible. I have been looking at a new Yaesu FT2DR to solve both the HAM/GPS and upgrade from my old and completely underpowered VX2.

GPS in a HAM is not the same thing as a GPS receiver. While both have Long/Lat it's not really applicable for trail nav unless you want to do everything the hard way.
