How difficult is it to replace the securikey with a key fob?

I have a 1998 Limited and it has a Securikey that doesn't currently work. I hate the bulky thing and would much rather have a normal key fob. Is it possible to buy a key fob and have it programmed for my 4runner and ditch the other key?

whoa...i'm a toyota tech and i've never seen that...but I would assume you can just replace that with a regular master key...as long as you have a seperate fob for the keyless entry

It's crazy, right? Its from my wife's truck which I drive now after I totaled my 04 Pontiac Vibe and replaced it with a 99 4runner limited for her. She's the second owner and swears that its stock equipment but I have never seen anything like it. It's supposed to operated like a key fob (like on the 99) but it has lost its memory. I would rather just have a key fob to be honest.

The major issue is that the securikey is supposed to function as a key fob. It unlocks the doors and glove box. I was going to get another key made and try to replace the keyless entry portion with a key fob. Just wondering if anyone knew whethe that was a viable solution or not.

Should I move this post to the electronics section? I don't wanna double post so can one of the moderators move it please?

Ive never even HEARD of a fob to unlock a glove box?!

I get the immpression it's from Gulf States Toyota, I have the exact same thing. Trying to get second key and instructions how to initialize it. Has any figured it out?

This is correct. Most Toyotas sold in the Houston area from 98 and 99 had Securikey+ as their car alarm system. Just google "securikey+" to get information on how to program. I don't believe it's possible to replace with another fob as this type of key/fob combo was exclusive to the alarm that was installed by the factory. So, you may have to replace the alarm system entirely if you want to use a different type of fob. This is just my guess.

Btw, I haven't had a chance to reprogram the system because both 4runners are in the shop having the stolen catalytic converters replaced. :cry2:

The last time I bought a new securikey+ module (just the back grip with buttons, it had the same key from old module) a Toyota maintence rep came out and programmed it for me for free. This was at the dealership right next to the Astrodome. I think if you went to a dealership they would program it for you for free. Just ask. :)

I guess the easy way never dawned on me! lol

I called Kevin @ Champion Toyota and since he has both of my runners right now (some ********* cut the catalytic converters off both of the trucks!) I figured he might me more apt to help. He said he will reprogram it for FREE if that's all it takes. Awesome!!!

If you really want a fob, the Securikey should have an FCC ID# on it somewhere. I'd try Googling that number and see if a fob comes up with the same number. If it does, it will work. If nothing comes up, then there probably isn't one.

catalytic converters

Dam, lots of reports of catalytic converters stolen! Just how much can the thieves get for them?!

I worked in the demolition business for the past 5 years and we dealt with scrap metal to make most of our money. Normal cats have platinum, rhodium, and palladium if I remember correctly. Scrap prices have risen lately and we should expect a spike in cat thefts from our runners.

Depending on the region, the model of cat, and the individual scrapyard a cat could be sold for $50 to $200 each.

It's costing my insurance $1925.81 and my deductible is $100. So I'm out $100 because some jerk won't get a honest job.
