How do I find the high beam power lead?

you can def run it like that. i have mine hooked up to my lightbar so i can either have the light bar on by itself, completely off (even if i click High beams on), and where it is triggered by the high beams.

you will need a 3 way switch similar to this:

OTRATTW

and then the cover of your choice. they have a driving light one.

So how would I go about hooking up the aux lights to make all this work? Does all it need is a three-way switch?

also, best way to tap in would be a fuse piggy back jumper like this:http://www.emergencyequipmentshop.co.uk/images/piggybackfuse.jpg
one of the connections on the 3way will be hooked up to your High beam fuse to trigger it, the other will be hooked up to constant power (or to the relay provided with your driving lights to the +constant hookup....

the other blade on the switch is for the light for the switch (you can get one thats lighted or not lighted). its a good idea to hook this up to an ignition source so that the light doesnt stay on all the time (when your truck is off).

ill go look at mine and confirm later. im pretty sure thats how i have mine set up

Fusebox tap won't work, the non-DRL headlight circuit has a common fuse for each bulbs' low and high beams.

Farmerjon - can you check the relay plug for a yellow wire and see if it's connected to a terminal marked 85 or 86,same for a black wire. I found the same Hella directions you have and it's pretty vague.

By the way, my '99 Hellas came with the relay plug improperly wired. They had two of the leads swapped. Took me two years to figure it out.

I didn't yet, I've been busy with several trips and such, I need to get back to it here soon, I want to get a 3-way switch set up. I need to catch up on the other responses in a few days when things slow down.

Pretty sure mine has a yellow wire that goes to the relay. What does that do for me?

So... UPDATE:

I got the stock Toyota fog light switch, installed it, but the light is ALWAYS on? even when I kill the truck, why is this?

So I'm manually hooking up the wires to the switch whenever I start the truck at night so I have lights...

In reality though, I want to have a three-way switch. with the option to have :

  • aux on with high beams
  • high beams on w/o aux
  • just aux

So how can I accomplish this?

That is hard.

The relay has two tabs that are the trigger and two that are the switch. Either your trigger is always powered, currently, or the switch part isn't wired right.

If you want the lights on with the high beams, I'd try a wire from the + of the battery to the trigger part of the relay and ground it to the high beam side of the headlight plug. At least that's how mine works. Not DRL though.

Ok soooooooo, I need to hook up a high beam flasher (wig wags) on my 98 SR5. + or - switched? I prolly missed it.......

farmerjon, on your 2002 4Runner, what are the colors of each wire going to the headlight bulb on the driver and passenger side, respectively?

or can you take a photo and post a photo of each side?

I have a 1998 'Runner.

I took a picture of the driver's side power leads. I took one of the passenger side, but it didn't turn out good. I've included and labeled the driver's side- that's the side where the relay and the battery hookups are on...so I figure that would be the side I would hook into. The arrows represent what color the wire is. the middle one, I'm not sure what it is, I think it is the ground.

Here's an image from earlier in the thread, perhaps it's right, I'm not sure.

You're still working on this?

I assume its because you still havent bought a voltmeter.

I have a circuit tester that refuses to light up (brand new) whenever I touch any of the metal contact points in the picture above...

And I'm still working on it because I've been gone and back, and am a student finishing the semester. Now I have a little breathing room...

Have you tried it with your lights on?

test 1,2,3 lights off
test 1,2,3 low beams
test 1,2,3 high beams

should be easily identifiable.

I've tried it with just the high beams on... nothing... perhaps I should try at night. I stick it into one of those three plug holes that plug into the headlight metal contact,s right? (sorry, I know nothing...)

yea, the contacts inside the plug. You'll measure one contact as 12V with the high beams on, 0V with them off. If you want to have the high beams your trigger voltage, thats the one to tap.

I ran the high beam wire to a switch, and onto the relay trigger. That way its only on when I have high beams on and knocks the off road lights off when I go to low beams. The swtich then allows me to have lights on sometimes with highbeams, but never without the high beams on.

Hope you sort it. Sometimes it easier just to measure **** directly

The Hella instructions want me to tap the high beams - currently this same wire is hooked up the battery - to the lights work on a simple on/off switch. If I take that wire off the battery and onto the high beams, then it should work only with the high beams, unless I flip the switch and only the high beams come on... like what you said (I think?)

BUT, I'd like to run a 3-way switch - like I detailed above so I can run the lights without the high beams, as well as with the high beams or just the high beams without the aux lights...

So how would I do that?

Appreciate the help thus far. It means a lot.
