How do I get this tap out?

I forgot to pre-lube and ended up with my tap breaking halfway through the thread. I tried drilling out with my generic bits, but they didn't even phase the tap. I also tried hammering the tap to try and break it, but didn't help at all.

I'm at a bit of a loss at this point. I can't weld and only have home tools for use. My next step was to go buy a carbide bit set and try that as it's supposedly harder than the tap and would have a better chance getting through.

Anything else I should try?

You tried a steel punch (i know you said you tried hammering it, I just didn't know how you did that)? Try one that's about 8mm or slightly smaller and just try to crack it?

If it was me, and I needed to get it out with basic tools, I would just drill out the gaps so there is less surface area for the tap to grip and then try and remove it as you did before, or simply keep drilling the steel until it fell out. In fact I would even try my smallest Starrett hole cutter, with the pilot bit in one of the gaps, and cut the whole sorry mess out.

My logic is that existing hole is going to need remedial work anyway, so you might as well make getting the tap out as easy on yourself as possible rather than try and preserve it.
 
They make tap extractor's. We have them at my job. I have never had to use one but the guys say they do work. You're dealing with a very hard and somewhat brittle piece of metal so if you don't go that route, about your only recourse will be to break it out with a punch. Drill bits won't do squat against it.

Tap extractor as others have said but I'd add get a can of freeze spray or Office electronics duster spray (some times called canned air, flammable kind) or a small block of Dry ice. Freeze the tap first then try to turn it out with the tap extractor if no good freeze it again and hit it with the hammer and punch.

Freezing it shrinks the metal slightly and makes the tap more brittle both of which can help in this situation.

Paint it. Forget it. Drill a new hole. lol.

You will be lucky to find a drill bit that will effectively drill out a tap.
 
Forget drilling it out. I've broken several taps at work and if it's a carbide tap keep smacking it with a hammer & punch until it breaks apart. If the tap is steel you can try getting it loose by hitting it at an angle with a punch from one side then the other.
 
As mentioned, it's brittle metal so breaking up with a punch often works. Otherwise cut/drill around it to remove then weld the hole shut so you can drill a new one or go with a bigger bolt. Looks like you could fish a nut up in there but looks annoying to me. :)

Here's a link to the one that actually got the tap out. Make sure to go left and right several times and use lubricant. I actually broke the first one as I tried to force it.

There's much higher quality versions out there. The Walton Tap Extractor Set seems to be the best quality, but does cost quite a bit more.

Nice... I may have to pick up a set just in case! Glad you got it out!

The last tap I broke was a M8x1.25 trying to clean up a skid plate hole on an old Tundra. I shattered it with a punch and was able to chase the threads with another tap, glad you were able to salvage the hole! :)

Yeah there's actually a nut welded on top, so the only bit that got destroyed wasn't really important to the integrity of the hold. In reality I really should just save up the cash and get a skid plate with a drain hole. I think budbuilt is the best one I found.
