how do i hard wire a power inverter to my battery?

Hi all,

I have an 04 Runner and wanted to hard wire a power inverter to my battery so that I can have it turn on when I start the engine. Now I've never really attempted something like this, but I know I need to add an in-line fuse and get through the firewall, but the question is HOW?

Has anyone attempted this before and can tell me how to run the wire, how to create an in-line fuse, and where I can run the wire through the firewall?

My truck also has the factory extra outlet in the center console and I was thinking, do you think it would be possible (and safe) to hard wire the power inverter to this wire so that I can turn it on with the factor switch?

The manufacture of the inverter will supply installation instructions specific to their unit. They will give several options on how to wire (temp and hard wired). Each inverter has different requirements; mainly the right size wire to safely supply power to the inverter. Usually large cables are attached directly to the battery (fused as close to bat as possible) and routed through the firewall (using rubber grommets to prevent shorts). Most inverters specify a max length cable (approx 6'). To have the inverter turn on when the engine is started you will need to wire in a relay to a circuit that energizes on startup.
