In the left compartment in the rear hatch there is a series of rods. The go in the near the rear hatch latch. Stik it in and turn.

I was wondering the same thing because my new 2013 4runner appears to have a chain instead of a cable. I can see a loop of chain hanging down from the center of the spare. If it gets above freezing here I'll go out, lower it and see.

As dumb as this thread is I would like to bring it back and make it even dumber. I am trying to lower my spare down to put some air in the spare to get rid of the TPMS light but I cant seem to get the lowering mechanism to work. I watched the youtube video and read the manual and I'm pretty sure I'm doing everything right. When I put the rod in and turn, it never catches on anything. I have tried wiggling it around to try to get it to catch with no success. Any ideas?

Probably rust in the drive opening. When I went to lower mine, it seemed like the extension was just spinning in the opening. I thought the square drive opening was rounded out. Once I removed the assembly, I noticed that the drive opening was just filled with junk, and the extension wouldn't insert far enough to be effective. Although I cleaned mine up, and got it to work, I replaced it with a new one. Also, if you get a long extension, instead of the supplied tool, you might have better luck. Keep working at it to get the opening cleared out. Good luck. As you can see by previous posts, these things usually need to be replaced.

Only thought is that you are not putting it in far enough. With all 3 rods connected it goes in nearly to the joint between the first 2 rods. Jam it in until you hit something...then wiggle it to get it to catch.

I wanted to lower the spare to check the tire that was mounted to it (since I bought it used) and had a really hard time getting it down. I would feel it catch but had to apply a TON of pressure into it while turning or it would slip out. I'm sure mine is either rounded or has enough crap in there to not allow it to fully sit.

I honestly felt like an idiot while trying to do this b/c it took me a solid 30 min to drop it....

First time I did it was frustrating. The key was to get my face under there and look at the mechanism and where it is and the path the rod takes to make sure it is clear and follows the guide.
