Depending on what sort of wheeling you do - you could just get a hitch dropper and flip it to hold the 1up higher off the ground for the occasional really tough trail, but not use it for regular day to day use.

Finally got around to measuring and ordering a bike rack from ISI ( iSi Advanced 4x4 Bicycle Carriers | Extreme Duty | Offroad | Cars | 4x4 | Caravans and Camper Trailers ). Seems awesome. The rack folds down easily, and the swingout still opens even with two bikes on the rack. And the bikes are tucked in close to the truck (the hitch has multiple holes - so I can scoot it in as far as clearance on the inner bike allows). And it's pretty far up in the air.
And even if I did something really unfortunate on a trail - from what I can tell the parts on the rack that would bend are easily replaced. Either that plain square beam that the wheel holders attach to (cheap), or the wheel holders themselves (which don't cost much either).
The hold-down hook is a bit on the crude side - it just has a wingnut that tightens down on the shaft instead of a lever clamp of some sort. But it's simple I guess, and that's the only part of the rack that touches the bikes outside of the tires. Far better than the previuos rack I was using where the rack would grind on the top tubes, the bikes would grinde against each other and to help prevent that I had to spend a long time each load/unload carefully rigging them all up with bungee cords.

Congrats on the new rack. Imo it's one of the best for some really narly offroad trails.

fold down the rear seats. remove the front wheel. roll down the side door window enough to stick the handgrip out an inch or so. roll the window up to put slight pressure on the grip. can get two bikes in like this.

North shore rack. (Although, if you have the money, the Recon rack is much better.) OME 906 in the rear to keep it level.

this. I actually took my rear seats out because I never use them. In my area, bikes get stolen off racks like free candy, plus I hate taking the wheels on and off, so I keep my bike inside the truck. always. There's even room for my 70lb dog to still sit back there.

I never did. I always carried my bikes in my Tocuma....
. However, some good setups here. I would have just put a hitch bike carrier on then put them inside. But this is just me.
When I biked, I rode cannondale fully suspended. I see some decent bikes on this thread though..

Modern Trek bikes are tricky because of the steep drop angle on the mainstay of the frame. I just use a hitch mount carrier, but I hae to take off the front wheel. I might be upgrading to a Thule hitch carrier soon, which will set both wheels on the carrier.
I plan to do a 2' lift suspension upgrade soon, so that might help with the clearance when the bike is strapped to the back.

I love my Yakima TwoTimer rack. I am unable to find a picture of my bike on it, but here is a link to the rack:

What I don't love about it: It is very expensive (I did not pay MSRP for it, though). It is pretty heavy (about 40+ lbs), so it is a pain to install/remove and hang up in my basement. I don't normally leave it attached, unless I plan to ride, so I often install/remove it once or twice per week. Edited: I can't open the back door with a bike on the rack.
What I do love about it: It is very easy and quick to load/unload a bike. I don't have to pull off a freaking front wheel. My gas mileage is essentially unaffected with a bike on the back. It is very stable. My bike does not extend above my roof or beyond my side mirrors, so I don't have to remember to think about not hitting things with my bike (except while backing up, of course).
I have never carried 2 bikes on it, since I always ride solo, but I imagine it would do that well, especially since the tire cradles are all independently adjustable.
