How do you classify your 4Runner?

Do you classify your 4Runner as a truck, SUV, or what? My roommate has a lifted Xterra and he calls his toy a "truck". Growing up with large American trucks, I can't help but be skeptical that one can classify Xterra's, 4Runners, etc. as "trucks". Of course, everything in 2016 is some SUV looking thing. What do you reference your baby as?

....truck. It's an '86 so it's really more truck than SUV anyhow (IMO). To be honest, I never spent any time thinking about it. Beyond a certain level of sentimental attachment (was my Dad's), it's really just a truck to me. ....with the usefulness that comes along with that.

It's a truck. If I have to call it anything else, it's technically a 4WD wagon. The second gen is more of a proper SUV, but the first doesn't really fit.

For me, anything with low range and body on frame is a truck. 4Runners are trucks.

Truck. My friend has a toyota dyna which is an actual lift-cab tray on the back 'truck', and we constantly debate wether my 4R is a truck or not... when his dyna was stuck in a field and my 4R was the only thing that could snatch it out, it earnt the title of 'truck'

Could someone explain the differences between 1st gen 'body on frame' to the later gens? I've heard body on frame thrown around quite a bit

BOF vehicles have a ladder frame that supports the drivetrain and suspension with a body that bolts to it. A unibody vehicle has the "frame" integrated with the body. BOF vehicles are better able to withstand heavy loads and hard use because the frame can flex independently of the body. Unibody vehicles are lighter and stiffer, which leads to better handling and fuel efficiency among other things. All 4Runner models (so far) are build as BOF.

I think its an SUV. the 1st gens even more so, since the top comes off. how much more SPORT, and UTILITY can you get?

but at home, since I have several, they are referred to by their colors, followed by truck. "we're taking the black truck" which means my 85 4runner. its just easier for the kids to keep track.

Love my MoreFunner's tailgate, but I wish the upper part were a hatch that's quick to open, instead of a power window that's slow and would not work if battery is dead.

The term "SUV" was not coined at the time 1st gens were new. Mine has been in the State of Virginia since new and it's titled as a "SW" -Station Wagon. Boo.

But I always call it a truck.

Thanks for that explanation! I haven't discovered the bolts for the body yet... Too much mud in the way

I call mine Awesome. But sometime I just call it the runner.
Sure it has a tailgate but to me a truck is a cab with a isolated truck bed. So it's just awesome w/tailgate.

I refer to my 3rd gen as a 4 door wagon because that's what it says on the paperwork lol.
