How do you get KDSS

Try using a different zip code when you build, it might not be allocated in your region.

I found where it says it's an available "feature" for Trails, but it doesn't seem to let me build it in. No biggie, I'l figure it out.
Is it worth it?

Right you are. You can not add KDSS on the Toyota "Build" site. It comes standard on the Trail Edition in most states, although people here say it is not offered in the southeastern US. Try looking at the specifications for the 4Runner on the build site and see if it includes KDSS. If it isn't included in the specs it may be an additional cost option. Budget about $1750 for KDSS. Go see a few of the TE at a dealer and see if they include KDSS.

It is optional but I don't think it's an "addable" option in the manner that your dealer would be able to install it. It's a factory build option and your dealer may or may not get one in their allocation.
Now, as others have mentioned, not all regions even have the option. For instance, GST does not bring them in. So if you go configure one on the toyota website and it auto-detects your region as in Gulf States, you won't even see it as an option.
Change your zip code to, say Colorado (80010), and you'll see it available as option packages starting at +$1000.

depending on location, it seems as if the site forces the kdss onto your vehicle. there was no way for me to purchase a trail in southern california without kdss, a sliding cargo tray, and the chrome tip.

^That! LOL I am not sure I would want a dealer adding it on after the fact. My local dealership is pretty decent, certainly not without issue, some dealer stories sound more like run flea and take your chances doing it yourself with a screwdriver in a muddy ditch during a cold weather rain storm.
If you select it as an option, I imagine you will be directed to inventory that has it already installed, if it is available.

KDSS is hard to locate in your geographic region , Toyota does not like to sell this system in the rust belt states . You could certainly order it and you may find a random one but as a rule Toyota tries to limit KDSS in rust prone areas.

What's funny is , out here in Cali you have to special order to not get KDSS, I would guess 99.9% on west coast have it
not in my NJ zip code....they must not seel a lot of that package here...weird

Yep. I know one of our members here on the forum came to Colorado and bought her's from the dealer I bought mine from because she flat couldn't find what she wanted where she lives (Gulf State) Texas.
Auto buying services like Automotive Avenues will also find what you want and get it shipped in. My ex wanted a specific package on her 4Runner that wasn't available in Colorado and they had the vehicle shipped here from Camelback Toyota in Arizona.
