How do you get KDSS

May be a dumb question....But I just bought my 2016 4Runner TEP, and I automatically thought the Trail had KDSS.

How do I find out if mine has it or not?

I mean she rides as smooth as my wife's 15' Accord sport. Minimal roll when conducting turns, and we barely feel bumps and/or humps at any speed.

Additionally, I drove a 2016 SR5 and it felt completely different than mine.

Look at the front swaybar, If it connects directly to the lower control arm.. It is KDSS. If it has a link that connects it to the spindle.. it is a traditional swaybar.

Check your window sticker, it is a ~$1500 option.

Also, there is a KDSS light on the dash, i assume would light up for a second or two on start up or with the key in the "on" position. Check your owner's manual, it shows the light

if you are mechanically inclined, when the driver's side sway bar links. If they don't look normal (like small shock absorbers w/ dust boots) you have kdss.

Well, shit.... I definitely don't have KDSS. Not gonna lie, pretty bummed out about it. :cry2:

It's not the climate , it's the chemicals ! and the USA has the worst or best depending how you look at it.

The US and chemicals...?! I must have missed that memo from the EPA

I dont know about other states but all the good chemicals are like banned in CA.

I can't even get a can of Brake Clean without some safe new and "improved" low VOC formula. That's not the only item... Who knows what other cockamamie new things are going to get pushed onto us.

Id love me some chemicals... if it works, BAN IT and make something that sucks so they have to spray twice as much into the ozone to get the job done... yay

I'm going to disagree to some but not all of this response. I'm not arguing that you might not have purchased direct from Toyota MFG but KDSS is the same as AC or any other complicated system on the vehicle. It requires tools and a particular skill set to repair however If a dealership sells it... AND it is made by the manufacturer they represent then there is an obligation to repair. I don't care what the dealership says, my lawyers would have something different to say.

Audi and VW dealerships can repair air suspensions that go out on their higher line vehicles...and these are not simple systems. Not once in my 8 years working with VW, Audi, Jag and Acura did I hear that we could not repair a system on a vehicle sold by our manufacturer. NEVER! And if we had tossed out some lame ass excuse to a customer about being unable to we'd have opened the door for all sorts of trouble far beyond that of a single pissed off customer/owner.

Lexus can repair KDSS on their vehicles equipped with that system.

There's no excuse around this happening with Toyota.

Now if the dealership withholds selling me a vehicle because they are not equipped to service and maintain said system on the vehicle I want then yes they are free from obligation to me and my vehicle but if they sell it to me without stating otherwise and expect me to sit on a broken vehicle that they will not perform repairs on then that's asking for legal trouble and trust me they'll get it.

I do agree that it more than likely does require tooling that some dealerships may not have invested in. I have no statistics on failures of KDSS to know if this is a frequent occurrence but in my time in these forums and in searching I've not come across anything that would suggest that either.

No. You bought your Toyota from an Independent company that sells Toyota products. They buy their product from independent Toyota distributors who buy their product from Toyota proper.

That dealer has to offer specific services under contractual obligation with Toyota among other things. Having to service KDSS is not one of them.

The reason very few dealers service this component is threefold:
1. Very very few vehicles have KDSS (this forum is not representative of the actual numbers)
2. KDSS very seldom fails by the simplistic nature of the design.
3. It requires special tools and training.
