How do you get KDSS

They don't sell KDSS in the northeast, and most dealers here won't trailer one in even if the buyer is paying for it. I had to go to Utah to get mine.

My 2015 Trail did not come with KDSS and I love my truck.
If I wanted smooth riding truck, I would have brought a Lexus RX hybrid.:noidea:

Its also based on how much off-roading there is, and with hardly any left on the East coast they probably dont see the demand. Colorado, Utah, Arizona and California are nothing but off-road playgrounds. I agree though, the KDSS is fantastic.

That's awesome. I guess they finally woke up and changed their tune. When I bought mine I was told by no less than 10 dealers here in NJ and Toyota corporate that I'd have to find mine in a different region, as Toyota flat out stated that they wouldn't sell Trails with KDSS to dealers in the mid-atlantic and northeast regions, and none of the dealers I spoke with were willing to truck one in for less than $4k in shipping costs, which I took as a "no." Saved a bundle just flying to Utah and driving mine back.

i'm on the east coast but not in the northeast, the northeast has a lot more offroading than we do and i found a few KDSS models to shop

i had read the posts here and didn't think I wanted KDSS until I drove a KDSS Trail model back-to-back with a non-KDSS and stopped even considering any non-KDSS models after that. You don't have to offroad, the onroad handling improvements are significant.

Same here, drove a Limited, Trail with KDSS and a Trail without. Trail with KDSS had the best ride.

I found where it says it's an available "feature" for Trails, but it doesn't seem to let me build it in. No biggie, I'l figure it out.

Is it worth it?

I had it on my 2012 Trail. I don't have it on my 2016 Trail. I don't miss it.

Glad you love your TE without KDSS but there is a big difference between what you call a 'smooth ride' and on road stability. Some of us prefer not having instability when driving with loved ones on the interstate while still having off road capabilities. A proper SUV should not sacrifice one for the other.

The comparison of a TEP with KDSS to a Lexus RX is just :wacko:

KDSS vehicles do not exist here in the Southeast but if you push a dealer will order one. They don't negotiate much on them and they double the deposit required to get them but they will not deny you one like dealers in the NE will.

I pissed off my dealer when I told them the only reason that SE dealerships did not sell KDSS was because they were afraid to work on them. :bolt:

Well, I'm in the Florida panhandle, and the TEP I bought from Panama City Toyota has KDSS as well as two others at Fort Walton Beach Toyota. Also, FWB has a TRDP listed for $44,946.

You would think that they are under legal obligation to work on KDSS. You bought a 4Runner from Toyota Motor Corp not whatever geographic Toyota sales conglomerate they decided to split themselves into for the purpose of making sales convoluted and difficult.

My concern with having KDSS in Texas is my dealership acts like they have no idea what it is. I wonder if I could take it to a Lexus dealership and get it worked on / techs know KDSS

I never even considered a 4runner without KDSS. Test drove the SR5 and TE with and without several times. Knowing I would be driving interstate everyday to work, the system pays for itself. Taking the on ramp in the SR5 was like a gigantic boat going left to right. Did not want that unstable feeling coming from a BMW with sport suspension and a previous R32 with lowered performance. Obviously, I do not expect sports car performance in a 4runner, but hell, that KDSS comes pretty damn close. Especially with a vehicle of that size and height. I doubt I will ever use crawl control but I had to have the TE for the KDSS. Toyota should really consider just selling the KDSS outright on all models.

Well said! My KDSS is terrific on Interstate. I've tested my crawl control but I've never HAD to use it.

How do I find out if mine has it or not?

I mean she rides as smooth as my wife's 15' Accord sport. Minimal roll when conducting turns, and we barely feel bumps and/or humps at any speed.

Additionally, I drove a 2016 SR5 and it felt completely different than mine.

No. You bought your Toyota from an Independent company that sells Toyota products. They buy their product from independent Toyota distributors who buy their product from Toyota proper.

That dealer has to offer specific services under contractual obligation with Toyota among other things. Having to service KDSS is not one of them.

The reason very few dealers service this component is threefold:
1. Very very few vehicles have KDSS (this forum is not representative of the actual numbers)
2. KDSS very seldom fails by the simplistic nature of the design.
3. It requires special tools and training.

I think some people on here have tried that with no luck. You may just have to call around to several dealers until one finally says yes. If you're in a larger city you may be able to find one, or you might have to travel.

Bought my Trail Premium W/KDSS in mid July 2016 from a dealer in NJ -about a mile from the GWB- that just happened to have one coming in the following day or two, perfect timing.

I searched dealerships here on LI where I live and besides one that I looked at a few months earlier -wrong color- the KDSS units seem to be a thing of legend around here.

For me the KDSS was a must have, wouldn't have bought one without it.

KDSS was the main reason I bought a TE in 2010 - the ride was far better than the SR5 or Limited. The off road capabilities were gravy at that point.

Check your window sticker, it is a ~$1500 option.

Also, there is a KDSS light on the dash, i assume would light up for a second or two on start up or with the key in the "on" position. Check your owner's manual, it shows the light

if you are mechanically inclined, when the driver's side sway bar links. If they don't look normal (like small shock absorbers w/ dust boots) you have kdss.
