KDSS is standard on every trail edition in Canada. Interesting since the entire country is a rust belt!
It's not the climate , it's the chemicals ! and the USA has the worst or best depending how you look at it.
Arizona is the same way. The dealer here told me it wasn't possible to get a Trail without the KDSS.
Yes all the clueless dealers here tell me the same thing "can't get it without KDSS" I won a free lunch from a local dealer after showing him my window sticker on a bet. lol

My dealers sales manager told me they couldnt get a trail without KDSS after searching inventory for me. He said he wouldnt charge me for it....I told him he wouldnt want to eat $1750 worth of options on what I was going to pay for my trail. I ran a 4R clinic on him and once he realized I knew everything about the truck the BS ended and things moved forward quickly on my terms.
Well, he searched the entire state so I'm inclined to believe him. The day I bought mine there were two other Trails on the lot and they both had the KDSS, so I tend to doubt he was pulling my leg. I got a huge discount on it, so I was happy in any event.
GST dealers can't even spell KDSS. When I inquired while searching for my TP, I got the "dog with head tilted sideways" look from them. So I knew unless I was willing to drive to Colorado to get my truck, I was not going to get this option.

Exactly that look. My local dealer was the exact opposite of helpful when I was searching.
But that's the great thing about the internet... Nationwide search, find a few dealers, negotiate a price and have them ship it. It was only a few hundred to have the truck delivered to the doorstep (well, the supermarket down the road, but basically my driveway).
Ended up much cheaper than local, configured exactly as I wanted to the T, and without any hassle at all. It was about a close to buying a car off Amazon Prime as one can get!
Not a fan of KDSS? I'm not thrilled with the hood scoop on the TE, but may go that way. thanks
I was amazed at how little the dealers know about these vehicles...like one member said, I conducted a 4R clinic in most dealerships. I even had one tell me that I will need to get the optional bigger engine to get the maximum performance.
The best one was....me: I am looking for a Trail Premium, silver or gray, salesman: do you want 2 or 4 wheel drive.

I think the hood scoop is an excellent built in stiffener. My hood has a lot of shimmy at highway speeds, I can't imagine without the hood scoop
I never even considered a 4runner without KDSS. Test drove the SR5 and TE with and without several times. Knowing I would be driving interstate everyday to work, the system pays for itself. Taking the on ramp in the SR5 was like a gigantic boat going left to right. Did not want that unstable feeling coming from a BMW with sport suspension and a previous R32 with lowered performance. Obviously, I do not expect sports car performance in a 4runner, but hell, that KDSS comes pretty damn close. Especially with a vehicle of that size and height. I doubt I will ever use crawl control but I had to have the TE for the KDSS. Toyota should really consider just selling the KDSS outright on all models.
I'm going to Colorado to get my 4Runner with KDSS, Nav and Running Boards this weekend for $37,700. The Dallas/Ft. Worth dealers told me if I want KDSS, it will be 90 days and not a penny less than MSRP.

Makes sense... I bought my from Grapevine 1.5 yrs ago, and it was the only one for quite a few miles. I got them to budge a little on the price back then, but I don't think KDSS models had quite come into their own at that point. I bet now a days they sell fairly quickly.

The build tool on Toyota.com only allows building of vehicles with trim and options which are available in in inventory of that region. So if all cars have KDSS in that region of inventory then your build will have it too.

All LC200's and all GX460's have KDSS. Not sure why they'd care if the 4runner had it in the same environments. My bet is that regions asked not to have to train techs on it or carry inventory to repair it because they didn't think it would sell very well in that area. I don't know why KDSS would be any more prone to rust issues in the south than it would in Japan, Indonesia, Australia, or other markets that KDSS is commonly sold in. Or for that matter any different from the OEM shocks or XREAS.
The only rust issue I've heard of is on the valves on the bottom of the control unit being cast steel they rust easily and get bound up.
