How do you remove the valance under the front bumper?

Sorry this is my first post so I don't know how great it will be; I have a 96 sr5 and I'm trying to remove the front valence. I must be re****ed because I can't get it off and I know it must be simple. I cant find which bolts to take off. If it looks good off, I'll keep it that way...if not, i'll paint it. Any pointers on removal process? special paints? etc

I plasti dipped mine, its holding up great after 4 months of Northeast winter and salt. Umm just poke your head behind the bumper and you will see the bolts that hold the valence to the bumper, i believe they are all 10 mm and theres like 8 of them.

I've done this twice so I should remember exactly but unfortunately I do not. Each time I did this I also removed the bumper so the task was alot simpler. But basically there are 8-10 clips and screws along the seam between the bumper and valence which hold it together. First you must take out the screws and then the clips can be pulled off (since the screw goes in the hole of the clip). I'll look through my photobucket and see if I have any pictures.

You plasti dipped the valance? That's a good idea. I've heard of people doing their bumpers but never the valance. I bet it would look pretty good. Thanks for the help.

Both posts are correct, but depending on where you live, and the amount of rust you have under there, you may break the bolts right off at the head. All of mine did, but I replaced them with bolt, washer, and nut combo's. If you don't want the headache, and don't mind masking the front of the truck, you can plastidip it right on the vehicle. I already had my bumper off, as I was replacing it, so I painted the valance while it was off the truck. (I also modified my valance...lol).

I'm getting a new valence this week (98 SR 5) if anyone is interested in getting a new one let me know, maybe we can can get a better deal buying more than one. If that is the case I'll buy a few extras and put them on eBay.

No there was some rust but I just keept loosening the bolts and pulling on it and eventually it dropped right off. Got a little scratched up, but doesnt matter since Im gonna sand and paint it. What kind of paint did you use? I like the satin finish

When you re-install, it's way easier to remove the bumper first.
Reach under to un-twistlock the bulbs from the signal lights, then remove 6 bolts:
2 on each side of the frame facing outward
1 on each side in front of the front wheels (through the access hole in the fender liner).

Lift it up ~1/4" and pull forward.

Off in less than a minute with the impact gun.

I used plasti-dip.....it's actually ads a plastic coating to the parts you paint....you can get it at hardware stores....

HA HA! Funny guy! It's training motivation! I used to compete in Full Contact Amateur Kickboxing....used those posters to motivate me to work on cutting weight! HA HA! The Rocky Poster Board also there for motivation....that movie got me interested in fighting way back when.....lol!

When I don't have my truck in the garage, I have my heavy bag and a double end ball set up with my 300lbs of Cast Iron Weights and bench press in there.

I've had to quit competing for medical reasons, but still like to train once in a while.....ha ha!

Valance painting

After my valance is reinstalled on my bumper, I'll post some pics. I am painting mine, too, a Krylon Ultra flat green and satin black. Ultimately, I want to do the body and wheels the same color as the green on the valance and black accents all over.

Slam it into the side of a Jeep Patriot at 25 MPH? :

Not saying that's the only way, but it worked for me!
