How do YOU use the Double-Decker cargo system?

I'm needing to buy a cargo mat for my new 4runner, but the double-decker cargo system has me stuck. Right now I'm having trouble imagining it as being anything other than in the way and I'm considering removing it so I can fit a full cargo mat there instead. It seems that if you are going to use the double-decker system in both positions, that a cargo mat would really be in the way.

So here's the question: How do you use yours and what kind of cargo mat(s) do you have, if any?

I go back and forth. I have 2 low profile storage bins that are about 6" high, 1 for cleaning and detailing stuff and the other with offroad recovery gear and safety stuff. With the deck up, they fit perfectly under it with room on the side for other stuff as well as on top.

Right now, I have the deck down with the bins on top but need to switch soon.

I removed mine at one point but then I didn't like the unfinished look and the parts were expensive so I put it back in and always have it down.

Mine is always down as I have found no practical use for it.

The downside to having it down is it leaves a lip that causes anything (like groceries) that is at the back to fall out when you open the hatch.

I am sure some people find it useful but I sure do not.

I did at first use it both ways and I still do sometimes but mostly I just leave it down. Makes it easier on the dog that way.

I find that I use the Double Decker Cargo System both ways. During the summer towing season, I tend to have it up keeping towing stuff on the bottom and my overnight bag, cooler, etc on top. During the winter I tend to keep it down except when traveling.

I'm using it in UP and DOWN position depend of what I want to carry. I do also have a cargo mats for bottom and upper part. If you are interesting I can make some pictures and post them.

I carry a lot of blueprints around, and it's useful for sorting & separating them by projects.

Because it is usually up, I also find it useful for putting groceries [no "grocery-getter" cracks: if you post, you eat!] that you don't want flattened: eggs, veggies, bread, chips, etc. The point about the rear lip is accurate, but the net solves it.

Mine's been down ever since getting the car last week. I think I'll put it up over the weekend and see how I like it. I feel like it'll be in the down position more often than not though.

How many of you all use the cargo net? I have one but it's still in the bag in the back. I feel like that can be pretty useful, no?

After breaking a few glass food bins I got cargo net.

Its been the best purchase for 4Runner so far.
