So I've replaced front suspension components including UCA, LCA, and struts in the past and what I've been curious about is it normal to feel every bump in the road? I live in Michigan where the roads are crap, if this isn't normal, maybe I need to buy a different brand of struts, currently using KYB.

I’m on Bilstein 4600s w/ Tacoma TRD Offroad front coils & FJ springs on the rear. While no 4R will ride like a car, I don’t feel every bump. I’d call it smoothly truckish on the pavement and nicely controlled on trails.

Dobinson's 3 front and 2 back.
I bought the Dobinson's 3 inch front 2 in back. Running 285/70/17's in September of 2018. I kept my front sway bar with a Toytec front swaybar relocation kit. I honestly do not think I need it, but I do have a trailer and some highway miles, so better safe than sorry. After a year they are still good, just some rattles and squeaks. They are definitely rough in washboards. Might be tire pressure, as I do not change it.

Yeah, I have a feeling the struts are defective or something else needs replacing, sometimes when I'm going over bumps, the 4Runner ends up "scooting" to the right or left, this doesn't seem normal.

Play around with tire pressure, what is it at right now?
I've always had it at the recommend psi of 32.

Mine feels pretty dang plush... 6112 up front, 32" MT tires with a C load range.
Most bumps on the road which are very noticeable in a passenger sedan are very smooth out to non-existent in the 4Runner
I've noticed that tires play a pretty large roll in how things feel. I can have E load tires with the same suspension and bumps are more noticeable. Instead of the tire absorbing it, it just pushes that load into the suspension.

Put some more air in your tires, maybe around 38 up front and 36 in the rear. i have on 20s w/ 265/50R20 and the pressure is set at 40 front 38 rear.
Mine rides so-so. Have 2.5" Fox coilovers up front and Fox 2.0 shocks out back, the rears are valved the opposite of what I want (#30 comp #90 rebound) so that should help ride when I re-valve them. Going to re-valve the fronts as well. The E range BFGs contribute most to the rougher ride though. My 1 ton Tacoma on 40" tires handles bumps a lot better than the 4runner.
My tires are still stock, doesn't more air = harsher ride though?
Are you using OEM control arms, or what brand did you end up going with?

My 06 has the original xReas, terribly stiff ride. Like you said it skips sideways on stutter bumps and follows imperfections in the pavement. No leaks or sounds from the shocks.

I can't recommend those 'all-in-one' shock things, installed them on my Sienna and they clank like mad.
