I was draining my tank while driving. I was on my way home from work tonight . The low fuel light was on and I drove until a had 0 miles left on the comp. range. OK It was midnite and I was starting to get a little anxious. So I stopped at Mobile at a little after midnite.

It took 23.03 gallons ( that I squeezed in for the grand total of $76.00....holy crapper .

I have drove about 20 miles b4 when my range read 000 and i think it took about 22 gal to fill up so i could have went a little more. i think when the range read ooo it still have like 2 to 3 gal left in the tank.
 
Yeah, I'm sure there's still some fuel left even though the meter reads 000. One time I totally forgot about fueling it up and let it go down to 0. I was sweat'n bullets, desperately looking for a "Top Tier" gas station, and there were none. I ended up driving roughly 5 miles beyond 000 and settled for ARCO gas. It ran like shit, but at least I didn't end up stranded.

You mean I filled up way to soon....lol

The pump clicked off at about 22 gal. I was able to squeak a gallon more in to her.
 
This thread reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer and the car sales guy see how far they can go past E :D I love that episode!

I went to 0 once and no matter what I have only been able to put in about 20 gallons. The tank is 23 gallons according to the manual and the specs so that leaves roughly 3 gallons after you reach 0 to get your @ss to a gas station. I am glad toyota gives you this buffer because psychologically you start to worry once you see 0 miles to empty on your display.
 
Last week I made 360 trip I have made many times and never had to worry about getting gas the whole way. Except this time I was hauling my trailer with an ATV on it and naturally I got less MPG, but I still didn't think about gas until I ran out on the interstate going about 75 or so. Good thing I was carrying a gas can for my ATV on the trailer or I would have had to walk about 10 miles to next gas exit. Still can't believe I let it run out like that, didn't even notice the light. By the way, from fill up till completely empty towing around 2000lbs I went exactly 315 miles, I think the comp said I was getting about 15 MPG instead of the normal 20-21 MPG.
 
Yes it is a 23 gallon capacity; page 349 in the Owners manual. When the range indicator hits 0 you still have approximately 3 gallons left. The range meter is not an actual/true indication of miles traveled so go by the fuel gage. I fill up shortly after she dips below
 
The tank holds 23 gallons, but remember the fuel pump is also in the tank and it needs some fuel to lubricate the pump. Once or twice won't hurt to run it down to almost empty, but doing this repeatedly will most likely damage your fuel pump resulting in a very pricey repair.
 
When mine hits 0 on the range ive got an easy 30 miles left. Ive gone as far as 40 miles reading zero. But if I fill up at 0 it'll take about 20-21 gal.
 
The computer range scares me. The fuel light comes on, the computer tells me I have 18 miles left to go and I don't know what to trust - the light or the computer. Is the fuel light controlled by the same computer that determines the range, or is it a separate sensor ?

In my old Jeep I had running on vapors down to a fine art.
 
I get 17miles/gallon (by doing the math over several tank fulls)
The tank holds 23 gallons
Therefore I could theoretically drive 17x23=391 miles before starving the pump

I like to leave at least 3 gallons of fuel in the tank which is equivalent to 3gx17gpm=51 miles

Therefore if I want to leave 3 gallons in the tank, I should fill up after I have driven 391miles-51miles = 340 miles total. This mileage could be tracked by resetting one of Trip OD indicators after each refill.
 
Last week my wife casually mentioned that the 4runner needed gas, it was late so I just shrugged it off. Got in the truck the next morning and saw 22 miles left on the range meter, got to the gas station 8 miles later, and put 20.14 gallons into the truck. The needle was flat on E for the whole trip. It never sputtered so I guess the 23 gallon spec in the manual must be close to correct. That's about as close as I'm willing to cut it...running out of gas just plain stinks.
 
I never paid attention to the computer, but I have driven it down to when the light was on and the needle was touching E.
