I've done lots of googling but can't find a definitive answer,

If I want to jack the front so that both wheels are off the ground at the same time how much lift does my jack need?

Most locally seem to be around 18" max height

Where do you plan on placing that jack to lift both wheels at the same time?

Most people just lift one side, put a jack stand under there, then lift the other.

It depends on where and how you lift the vehicle.

Personally I would jack each side and place jack stands under the frame rails. I would also have blocks in front and behind the rear wheels. The manual says there is a center jack point in the front but I wouldn't use it. Way to risky for my tastes.

As of the hight of your jack. Pickup a scrap 4x4 from Home Depot or local lumber yard. Use that for a spacer on your jack pad and now your 18in jack is 22in :)
 
18 in max is just barely enough. You should be okay. I'm using 19 and 3/4 with plenty of clearance to put jack stands under the frame.
 
Depends on how high your jack points are to start with. This can be changed depending on the size of your rims/tires and if you have a lift or suspension mods. Depending on the jack you plan to use you may be able to elevate it using blocks or a plate of some kind. Of course this has to be done safely. You will also have to pick a single lift point for each end/side of the vehicle because the manual only lists jack points for each wheel.

its pretty common to lift the entire front or entire rear, that is a normal thing people do. As long as the ground is flat and you use jack stands its perfectly fine.

good idea

I thought this would be quite common practice tbh so thought someone would be able to answer and its stock height, I have to change between winter and summer tires twice a year and it would just be easier and quicker to jack the whole front like I do the whole back

when I lift front wheels off ground I lift under the lower control arms I have a 22inch 3 ton floor jack then put a block under the control arm.

this causes the vehicle to be very stable since the lift is maybe 3 inches .

jacking on the frame to get both wheels off ground is a bit dangerous with the height required to get the front wheels off ground.

jacking under the lower control arms the vehicle is almost level with wheels front off the ground. easy to inspect brakes/rotate wheels etc..

You don't trust the Toyota engineers that build this stuff but you trust a block of wood to hold a 5000lb vehicle up. :confused:


OP I have a 21" jack from Harbor freight, does the job.

The other question you should ask is how low/short does the jack have to be if the tire is flat? I once got stuck in a 89 Ford Ranger with a jack that was too tall to get under the frame or axle when the tire was flat. Make sure your jack can do both.

The illustration requires putting the jack between the wheels, way under the front end. You'd be standing too close to the vehicle as you lift it. It shows the lift points for a garage lift with 4 swing arms, on the frame between the tires. And it shows the rear lift point under the differential. Again, you'll be too close to the truck for safety. It shows jack stand points on the rear axle but none on the front. I would not follow this generic jacking illustration.

For working on the suspension you can't use the LCA for lifting. You need that part to drop freely. So lift from the frame.

Lift one side at a time and use jack stands. And yes, I'd trust a 4x4 block to hold the weight of the vehicle at any one corner, about 5000/4=1250#. The only problem with a 4x4 block is it can roll or tip over, not being very wide at the base. It would do for one corner at a time but for two points I'd use several larger blocks laid sideways. I have lots of big blocks of scrap lumber around the house now so I could do that easily.

Having just jacked my two story 1913 house up using a 20 ton jack and 4x4 posts I have a sense of what can be done with wood posts. Being a structural engineer helps too. I've been repairing and reinforcing long girders below bearing walls to level my kitchen floor before remodeling.

the jacking points that toyota shows is for the toyota jack .

the lower control arms , this is not possible with the vehicle jack, but a low profile jack like I have works great and extremely safer than vehicle jack .

also I do use solid wood blocks made of OAK . much safer than a chinese metal jack stand .

working in a repair shop on 10K plus lbs drive train transportation equipment ,we only used solid OAK blocks when servicing the parts like wheel replacing and other work .
