Pioneer AVH 360xx weak signal fix
I put the new HU in and plugged in the larger of the antenna cables. Got a few Nice FM stations and just static on the AM. Old Chevy and Ford get listenable AM on the talk radio station I like, but the new pioneer, NADA.
Tried the Y cable fix, either, or and still no AM at all. Finally figured out the small black single wire with white connector bundled with the two antenna cables was the lead to the Antenna Amplifier.
I set the radio to my favorite AM station and turned it up with just the larger of the two antenna cables plugged in. Ran a jumper wire from the the female end of the connector to the cigarette lighter center connector and Bingo, clear AM.
The easy way to connect to it is cut one side of a fork crimp on connector off leaving one of the forks. It will plug in snug to the white connector, wrap it with stretched electrical tape a few wraps covering any exposed fork and locking it in the connector and solder/shrink or crimp it into the Acc lead on the adapter harness where it is feeding into the radio head.
The antenna out wire on the metro connector had no power. So Acc does the same thing anyway. When the car is on, so is the antenna amp, car off, amp off. No phantom battery bleed that way.
The pioneer Gets crystal clear AM that was so weak it was just static. I tried the Y cable adapter and found the signal was slightly weaker. So like others I just put the larger cable directly into the Head Unit.
Now i do have a bit of a problem with the FM reception, I live way out in the boonies on a large mountain. Every single slot in FM has a station on it. Just insane reception...
I have a three hour drive to visit my Dad, half way there I used to change to a different AM station to keep the shows I like running. At the center point the stations were both crappy but listenable. Now I am getting his AM station in my front yard from 90 miles away. Crappy barely listenable, however i used to have to drive an hour or before it ever showed up on the dial!
The reception is crazy good... All because of the Antenna amplifier in the schematic above.
