How long can you idle on a tank of gas?

I've gotten recommendations from a few people who also snowboard. If stuck in a highway shut down due to snow/road conditions, start up the engine for 10 minutes blast the heater to stay warm and shut it off for as long as possible until heat is needed again.

I made them in about 3 hours and they allowed me to camp in -0 temps in the Colorado Rockies without starting my engine at night. Granted I had my girlfriend in the 4runner as well and tons of thick blankets but we were quiet cozy.

They also allow you to stealth camp whenever need be which is extremely handy.
