how long did it last???

i was just wondering, the people who had to do the dreaded head gasket replacements. how long did it last again before the gasket blew again, if at all?? and did you make any modifications other than headers to prolong the longevity of the head gaskets? Thanks all!

The factory did the recall on our 1990 at about 50k, the truck has about 96k on it now. There is no coolant loss (knocks on wood) or oil consumption to date. The upper tank started to leak on our rad (original) and rather then get it fixed, I replaced it with a new factory unit. They have definitely improved the core compared to the original (ie better cooling capacity/efficiency).
I did modify the airbox to "breathe" better , but NWOR headers are next on the mod list.

The original owner of my 1989 4Runner had the recall, or 100k gasket plan for the truck (what it was called, I actually have the document). Once it was over he did the head gasket in the form of regular maintenance. I have the service records for the truck since new, and it looks like he did the job several times over the course of 311,000 miles. I may be wrong (without pulling out the documents) but I think he did it every 50k or so.

head gasket, or the valve cover gasket? Replacing the head gasket every 50k miles seems a bit overkill. I just recently read on here about someone replacing the valve cover gasket as a part of the regular maintenance.

It wasn't a swap since I just had a new (but same) engine installed.
I have about $4500 in the new engine install. The engine was close to $2000 and the labor and parts and supplies and oil and injector seals and tranny cable and... well, you get the idea. It can snowball downhill real fast.

I now have a "like new" 1995 4Runner that I could never sell for close to what I have in it... and that's ok with me.
