How many guys are still on original transmission fluid? Come on in!

I had the transmission fluid machine flushed @183k miles by the dealership.

There was a slight "clunk" that I noticed when pulling away from a stoplight when cold. Surprisingly the transmission flush seemed to have eliminated the clunk completely. I didn't notice any difference in shifting as it was smooth prior to the flush but since there was no record of it being done by the PO I wanted to have it flushed for peace of mind.

Are you sure it wasn't the "driveline clunk" that most experience when letting go of the brake?

Just did a drain and fill on my transmission today. Shifted great before and after.

2003 v6 SR5 4WD
Felt like it was time going on 223, XXX mile with out any type of service.

Can someone give me a quick confirmation of how much fluid is needed for a simple drain n fill?

2006 V6

I just did mine today. I lifted the front end about 1 foot in the air to do the drain, and got exactly 4 quarts out. I put about 4.25 qts back in to bring it to the proper fill level, so it was apparently a trifle low before I started.

How much do you think would have drained if you were on level ground?

I really don't know. Less, for sure. The FSM says 1.37 qts for a pan and drain plug removal, so I suspect that's what you'd get with a drain/fill on level ground.

I think lifting the front perhaps causes more fluid to drain out of the torque converter than if the vehicle was level.

172k original owner(s) 03 v8.... spring time when I change out the snow tires I'll be planning a full fluid swap. Did everything at about 85-90k except tranny so we're due

Just bought my 2004 V8 with 167k three weeks ago. Had it at the dealer to replace the transfer case actuator and figured they might as well replace the screen and fluid while they were there, since I have no idea how the truck was treated previously. Advisor said the fluid was dark but otherwise everything was in good condition.

I bought my 2007 Limited V6 back in the middle of December of last year. It had 147k on it when I bought it, a little more than I would have liked but at the end of the day she's not even broken in yet.
On with the topic- I did a fairly thorough test drive and she seemed to perform very well aside from the tires being very worn. Other than that I couldn't seem to find any issues. Anyways, bought it and was happy as could be UNTIL I noticed that under slight to normal acceleration it would shudder when it shifted gears upwards- no issues downshifting. Moderate to hard acceleration this problem did not occur. Looked on multiple forums for answers and solutions and found a wide variety of answers. Some people straight up replaced transmission to fix the issue while others replaced the transfer case. There were even cases where this did not fix the issue. In some cases people did a good solid flush of the transmission and the transfer case and the issue disappeared. Needless to say I was starting to get worried and almost regretted my purchase. I talked to my father who is a BMW tech of 27 years and he said that it very well sounds like the transfer case is the issue. After I informed him that if I took the 4R out of Overdrive that it would cease to shudder. As soon as I told him that he knew it was a transmission issue and said more than likely I have a clutch pack that is slipping. We changed all the fluids(complete flush of the transmission) on the unit as well as added some BG AT additive that is supposedly the greatest thing since sliced bread. They use the BG additives heavily at his dealership and he says they've always worked miracles on the cars. Its been nearly a month since we did the flush I have not had a single issue out of it since. Unfortunately I didn't drop the pan and change the filter while I was there but oh well. BMW also has what they call "lifetime fluid" and some techs and enthusiasts would even say that changing the transmission fluid and filter on those cars is taboo but my father has always been of the opinion to change both fluid and filter every 60K or 70K. Ive owned multiple bimmers and changed the fluid and filters on them all and not had an issue. It may be worth noting that the bimmers that Ive owned have all had GM sourced transmissions. I hope you enjoyed my novel.

TL;DR- the transmission shuddered when shifting so I did a complete flush of the transfer case and the transmission and added in some BG AT additive and the problem is now gone

First post, love this forum

I bought "Blackie Chan" in December of '16. He had 167k miles when purchased.
Condition: mechanically sound save for leaky CV axle, minor cosmetic/ creature comfort issues. $10k for a locally Cascadia owned 2003 Limited V8 in Black. My favorite part is the replacement grill doesn't have the V8 badge.

So here's the recon order I had done on this guy. 1 part me, and1 part a friend with a warm garage.

2 new CV axles
timing belt
idler pulley
water pump
fan clutch
drive belt
tensioner
failsafe thermo (first I've heard and I love the idea)
plugs
filters checked out
engine oil OMG I DRAINED ROYAL PURPLE!!! somebody out there is really sad right now!
transmission fluid

I can assure you that this V8 limited at 13 years old with 168k miles has a brand new transmission, original from the factory.

It had never been opened, was a bit of a hassle, and it was perfect.

The fluid was pink, magnets clean, and filter looked brand new. It took a little more than a gallon to fill. If you have the tow package with intercoolers I would never touch the tranny, even at 500k I bet its fine unless you climb rocks.

Ok, I will be the bad guy and call bull on this. No way was the fluid pink with 167k miles. It had to have been recently changed. Also, if you only did a drain and fill you would only be adding about 3 qts. If you did a full exchange its about 3 gallons. How did you end up adding just over a gallon? Either it was low on fluid or you over filled it.

call bull all you want, the previous owners definitely babied this thing. I pulled royal purple out of the engine fer ****'s sake. I seriously doubt this was ever more than a road warrior.

I dropped the driveline, adjusted the tranny with a jack to get access to the pan and swapped the filter too. maybe swapping filters allowed more to drain? That happened with my old F150.

Toyota claims the transmissions are designed to remain sealed indefinitely. I'm a little paranoid so I did my recondition. I cannot guarantee that the previous owners never swapped tranny fluid, but why would a silly Kirkland yuppie ask for this when Toyota advises against it? IDK, maybe they're above average and they did swap fluids. (obviously they had the money)

145k on mine. I'm the second owner and don't believe the fluid has ever been changed. I'm doing a drain and fill at 148-150k for piece of mind.

06' 90k miles, I think it's original, as I can't imagine anybody would have changed it. I bought at 79k miles almost a year ago.

bought my '07 V8 Sport 3 months ago from original owners Mother/Daughter drivers. No record or memory if ever changed.

truck shifts so smooth i am debating even opening it up and replacing the trans fluid.

197,xxx miles.
