How many keys do you have

My mom's 97 Limited has the same key for ignition and doors. But my 98 SR5 has different door and ignition keys. Is this normal? Does it mean my ignition key / cylinder was changed?

Most likely they were changed. As far as how many keys I have personally it’s way to many.

Yeah sounds like it was changed out at some point. In my GM days we would make sure to re-key the cylinder.

New it would have come with 3 keys if it had an immobilizer (one being the grey valet key) and 2 (possibly 3, I can't remember when they started issuing 3) if they are the non-immobilizer key (metal ones).

I know when I started working at a Toyota dealer in 2002 that we were getting 3 keys regardless of the vehicle.

Yes, your ignition cylinder was replaced at some point. I replaced mine last year, so I have a new key for the ignition and the original key for the doors. It’s a bit annoying to carry around the extra door key just in case the door lock fob dies, but I’m putting up with it for now. One day when I have time, I’ll rekey the new cylinder to match the door key.

My ignition key won't unlock doors but does allow me to roll down the back window from the tail gate so if my fob dies I can climb over some seats. Thought it was strange it rolls rear window.

Do you have a completely different cut for your door? If not, then I'd assume the key you're using is a copy? I know I've had copies made that worked fine in the ignition, but needed to be re-cut because they wouldn't open my doors.

- he made me 2 common lock cylinders, for my Silverado doors with spare keys / that were screw driver damaged, by a B&E attempt
- all I sent him was a Apple 5s iPhone photo, of my ignition master key profile
- saved $300, avoiding local GM dealership
- worked perfect, he really knows his automotive lock stuff / and very reasonable prices
- I live 75 miles from the Port Huron, MI boarder / so sent package to $3 CanAm Parcel Pickup, and saved broker fees & HST

My 99 3RZ came from the dealer with 3 keys, 1 Gold emblem keychain, 1 key code# plate, 2 fobs & two alarm remotes (dealer installed Lo-Jack).

My 99 Limited only came with 1 ignition key so I had 3 made. Keys from eBay, cut at the local hardware & programmed by me all for under $30. A lot cheaper than going to the dealer.

It's a Toyota cut key. Think it's original. It only opens rear hatch window and ignition. Never got a door key when I bought it. just a fob.

That said I dated a girl in college with five keys to her Accord. Problem is when I first met her was that they were all on the same key ring. All that good it would do her. Came by my work many times to pick up the spare she decided to leave with me after locking her keys in the car. Smart though, dermatologist today.

I got one metal key with my '01 when I bought it. I don't remember if it was an OEM/original or not.
I ordered two OEM black top keys, and one OEM metal key. I had the dealer cut them from the VIN.
Yes; if you need more than one key to operate any of the cylinders, your ignition cylinder has likely been replaced.

So interesting to hear so many sides of the key's but yeah Mark_BC - personally I would get those rekeyed unless you really trust the guy down the street who you purchased the 4Runner from. I'm paranoid, maybe to much but I got almost identical from the previous owner like [MENTION=7105]Scramble[/MENTION] did. I won't lie it's on my mind to just COMPLETELY re-key everything in the next few months. The guy who I purchased it from lives in the same small city I do, don't see anything going to come from it but still scared

Well they moved to New Zealand, that's why they were selling it... it's just more of a pain to have two keys to mix up and lose. Also I usually use the Club when I park but most of the time it sits in the garage. I'm also going to put in a couple kill switches, one for the fuel system and one for something else. That will stump anyone.

If you're using that original key day to day, I'd recommend not doing that. Use it only to make copies from. That way you have the best key to make any future copies and you won't wear it down. Making copies from copies isn't the best.

Some of the smartest people I know do some of the spaciest sh*t I know too. I feel it's because their brains are often time so focus on something that some of the rest gets lost.

This is exactly what I did with my new Limited. The original key stay's in the draw & the two copy's are for me & my GF. My valet key is in my wallet in case I get locked out.

My 99 SR5, purchased new, came with 3 keys and 2 remote fobs.

A limited should have definitely had a fob of some kind.

I've since replaced the entire lock set due to break-ins and the the ignition cylinder wearing out. No cutting keys by vin for me.....
