If you're using that original key day to day, I'd recommend not doing that. Use it only to make copies from. That way you have the best key to make any future copies and you won't wear it down. Making copies from copies isn't the best.
That's exactly why I have the dealer cut the keys from the VIN.
I know our split-wafer ign cylinders are prone to failing, and I'd like to know if keeping the keys un-worn helps with longevity. I don't think it does, but just a thought.
