How many miles to pass emissions?

It varies, it's not the same for every car. Certain parameters need to be met and multiple drive cycles need to be made in order for the car to run certain tests. I put 38 miles on mine last time before emissions testing (it had been sitting with the battery disconnected) and it passed. I've seen a car that needed over 1,000 miles put on before the readiness codes were gone.

I got a CEL right before I was going to get my inspection. I forget the code but I looked it up and it was a o2 sensor code. I cleared the error codes with my ultra-guage and brought it in to get inspected anyway, expecting i was going to fail. It passed. The CEL/codes never came back, now 6 months later. I have o2 sensors waiting to be installed.

Doing research this morning with all this and I have learned a lot. A couple of questions have come up:
First - clearing DTC codes via a scan gauge (or similiar) will this also reset readiness monitors to show as incomplete?
Second - I found the drive cycles for a 2001 2WD Limited. Can the parameters be cumulative in order for the drive cycle to show complete for a particular cycle? Example, drive pattern No., 4 calls for 16 minutes of driving between 35-45 mph (for the AF sensor drive cycle). That's not easy to do nor practicable in big city driving. So, can the time be cumulative (for instance stop and go traffic) to meet the 16 minutes within this range? Or does it have to be done continuously for 16 minutes vacillating the driving speed (35-45 mph) to complete this readiness monitor drive cycle?
What a PITA all this is. why can't these f-ckers just go with sticking a darn hose in the tail-pipe and reading the exhaust gas composition??!

The catalytic converter cycle can take way longer than 37 miles depending on your drive habits.
