I read through the 10 page long transmission shudder thread and it made me wonder how many of us have this issue and how many of us got it fixed. Hence the poll.

I don't have any shudder...but...

The transmission in my 2010 SR5 always seemed a little "slushy". When I was rolling along in the parking garage at about 5 MPH with the transmission in second gear, it always seemed like it took excessive RPMs (about 1k) for the transmission to hook up. It almost felt like I had a stall converter in the transmission.

My 2012 TE's transmission feels strong as an OX. Good hookup, good shifts...but...

I have a small "whine/squeal/chirping" that is emanating from the transmission. The whine occurs when the transmission is in R or D with the vehicle either stopped or when I just start moving forward. The noise is definately coming from the transmission. I had the vehicle in D crawled under the vehicle, and it was very clear where the noise was coming from.

I don't know what to make of this. The vehicle only has 3000 miles on it. I will just ask the dealer to take a look at it when I go in for my 5000 mile floor mat inspection.

Are Tacomas having this issue? I drove my dad's 2012 yesterday and I thought I felt a little shudder when I got on it a bit taking off at a stop light. I thought maybe I was just imagining it.

Yep, this was fixed via a TSB reprogram/flash. Would drive me crazy when turning onto a street, pressing the gas, the engine would rev and the 4R would just sit there and be like, 'you want me to do what?'. After the fix it drives exactly how it should, night and day.

Hey Westwind..could you share the TSB number and information for others who may benefit from it?
Thanks!

This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emission Warranty, which is 96 months or 80,000 miles.

I had the same shudder and complained to toyota about this with no results. but after finally reaching 16,000 miles the shudder finally went away.

Thanks for posting it! It only covered the 1st few thousands 4R's Toyota made (of the 5th's). I figure most people have had this taken care of, especially into 13' already. It could not imagine driving the 4R with the same issue for this long, it would have been replaced!

Even though the TSB does not specifically address the issue you described and the one I had, it fixed it.

I have this problem, taking it to the dealer tomorrow for my 15k maintenance... Let you guys know what they say.

dekeman Would you please tell me how to substantiate the 96/80k wty you speak of? I'm going to get this done, and I want to go in prepared.
westwind77 I had to laugh at your description. Mine does exactly this in my parking garage, and around corners.

Pat, as soon as I get some supportive documentation, I'll make an appointment for this. My SM and his dept. have been very cooperative so far. I'll update ....

"Federal regulations require that this

I have absolutely not clue if that is what OP is talking about, but maybe you can use that as fire power at the dealer since it sounds like it is your ECM that is affected and needs some recalibrating?

My '13 has harsh shifts at low speeds, I wounder if this TSB will apply to mine, since you said it only covers the first few thousand.

Although, just because toyota is aware of an issue, doesn't mean they will fix it for newer models...they still haven't fixed the driveshaft clunk issues that they have known about since the 3rd gens....

Most of these issues were on the '10-'11 models. There is also a TSB for the driveshaft thunk for those same years. I know my '12 shifts fine and has no clunk. The big issue for the shift was a "slipping" between 1st and 2nd while going around a slow speed sharp turn, such as parking lot driving. My '11 SR5 had it and was fixed by the re-flash if I remember correctly. So was the driveshaft clunk when stopping.
