My symptoms were exactly as bolded below. Had it since new, annoying as shit.

... When I was rolling along in the parking garage at about 5 MPH with the transmission in second gear, it always seemed like it took excessive RPMs (about 1k) for the transmission to hook up.....

Yep, this was fixed via a TSB reprogram/flash. Would drive me crazy when turning onto a street, pressing the gas, the engine would rev and the 4R would just sit there and be like, 'you want me to do what?'. After the fix it drives exactly how it should, night and day.

Service experience: Stellar: in 0800, out 0845. SMART Toyota, Davenport, IA. No donkey punching needed. No charge BTW.

SW comments upon completion: “Well, Mr Philsey, ‘it took’. Your VIN is outside the scope of this TSB and sometimes the ECM will not accept the reflash because of that”. Horsepucky? Dunno, I just report the news.

Results:

UPSHIFTS: I immediately noticed ‘softer’ upshifts. I had no concern with this before – I kinda like feeling a trans shift (wife’s ’13 Accord CVT weirds me). But previously “firm” upshifts are now a little less so – no problemo, just an observation.

DOWNSHIFTS: I also noticed a difference in the 5-4 downshift. This used to be quite noticeable when coasting down, occurring at ~ 38 mph. It still happens, but at ~35 mph, and it too feels ‘softer’ / less abrupt / less noticeable.

THE BIGGIE: Since new, I’ve had the problem as bolded above. I did quite a bit of experimenting on the drive home. I can say this odd hesitation between 2-1-2 is 98% gone. Because, of course, I’m looking for it, I will say I notice something. But another driver would not.

I am totally satisfied with the experience. It is 100% obvious that this reflash has changed the trans characteristics for the better.

Hey guys! I've got my 2011 TE in at the dealer right now. It was mostly to get an oil change, but also to check out the thump I was getting with heavy breaking and occasionally funky shifting at slow speeds...

Then I realized I should probably check here and see if you guys know what's up and sure enough, I'm not the only one out there.

Since my TE is still at the dealer, I went ahead and called him and asked him to flash the latest ECM software, which he said he'll do.

As for the slipjoint greasing, I'm a bit of a newb at car maintenance... Could someone give a some more detailed description to what's involved. Ohh and pictures... I do love pictures!

Edit: Nevermind. I found this thread where someone asked the same question about how to grease the joints, and of course, the community delivered. This forum has made my day. I might take the TSB for the slip-joint in to my dealer if the problem persists much more.
