San Francisco. I don't see many 5th gen 4runners here so I can't imagine them being that popular. I see mostly current gen Highlanders.
Just looking at the online inventory on some dealer websites, I see some dealers advertising $2k off MSRP without doing anything.
While I was at the negotiating table, I was looking on edmunds.com on my phone to get the invoice price. Is there a more accurate website for invoice price nowadays? I used edmunds.com when I bought my Tacoma 10 years ago. The dealer even printed me a copy of their invoice and the edumunds.com price was pretty close. At the time the dealer gave it to me at invoice price which was about $4k off MSRP because the salesman said they make some money on holdback and bonuses based on volume.
Those car sites and dealers all work together now. No one will ever tell you the flat out invoice price.

He got me a trd off road premium for just under MSRP OTD no hidden fees(just don’t get their warrnety and maintenance plan-that’s where they get you lol)

I wouldn't consider 230miles new. Even if its never been privately titled that is a dealer demo and used vehicle.

From what I've been told KDSS with moonroof in a TRD OR Premium are hard to come by. 230 miles wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but the lack of a moonroof sure would be

Interesting. This is the general configuration we are looking at. Here in New England there are only 6 TOTAL with those options within 100 miles (based on cars.com)....11 within 200 miles. I guess you Cali folks are hogging them all ;-)

I bought this identical car, but in white and had the frame sprayed with the rust protection stuff. See this post. MSRP was $42,934 and my total price before taxes and fees was $39,784. This car only had 1 mile on it when I test drove it. I really doubt that price is "at cost" for them.
I bought that same configuration (MSRP was $43,119) also in white and I paid $38,670 before taxes and fees. Also had 1 mile on the odo.
Price of car: $38919.00
Discount: -4202.00
Trade in credit: -20000.00 (mentioned it after negotiating price)
tax & tag: 1073.19
Got that deal in Kennesaw GA at Cobb County Toyota (right outside of Atlanta). Had another dealer at $36000.00 out the door (although honestly I don't think they were going to be able to deliver on that deal, manager said it was a mistake/misunderstanding, but I had it on a buyers sheet). So, I used that to go to the other dealer and told them if they matched this offer, I would sign right then bc I would rather have their MGM than white. They agreed and were great to work with.

Keep in mind that when you see invoice pricing, there is also the holdback which was a little over $900 on ours. Not as much as I thought it would it be but sometimes you can dip into that and then get a price that is "below" invoice. Depends on how bad they wan't to move it. From our experience in the Portland area, TRD's were going for "invoice" + and not below...

I puzzled how some people can get $5k off MSRP. I'm struggling and the best i can get is $2400 off MSRP.

I only deal online for both of my recent purchases, agreed on price, and then finalize it at the dealership. I got $6000 off MSRP for mine. It did however take 1.5 months of negotiations but I was in no rush and they knew it. Got the exact interior/exterior colors I wanted on a special order and had to wait 2 months.
If you're not in a rush, show your interest and let them call you.

Do not worry and do the best you can. Until I see a copy of the sticker and the bill of sale I wont believe anything. Too many variables otherwise.

Its the West Coast tax. I was having the same issue here in Oregon until I lucked out and found a used 2017. Just be diligent.
Did u try the Santa Rosa dealership I mentioned earlier?

Not yet. I'm emailing local dealers first. Then I will expand if the local dealers play hard ball.
