How much did you pay for your 3rd gen?

$2800 in Cali for mine 2 months ago with 193K on it. Had unknown timing belt situation when I bought it. Other than that it ran and runs well. I am about $6300 into it now, including purchase price/tax/tags. All it really "needs" is the valve cover gaskets to be replaced, which I will probably do next week.

Thanks! I was actually searching for a Cherokee and came across this truck. I picked it up the next day since I had never seen one even close to this price.

So Far:

- Timing belt and associated stuff
- Airaid
- Deck Plate
- 3" lift using various stuff from Wheeler's
- 5100s
- 1.25" spacers
- 285/75/16 Geolander Mts
- New Head Unit
- Tundra 199mm brakes
- Front/rear swaybar and steering rack bushings
- Spark plugs
- Rear Spartan locker
- Right side inner and outer tie rod
- OEM lower ball joints
- Koyo radiator
- CB setup

I'm sure I'm missing some little stuff. I still have some small maintenance stuff to do. I need to install the valve cover gaskets and the radiator. Might do right side tie rod stuff. I need to order the axle seals so I can install the locker. Probably gonna need rear brakes. It never ends :wacko:

Nice upgrades [MENTION=177268]02gixxersix[/MENTION], sounds like money well spent. I like to do things like tie rod ends in pairs, that way you know everything is fresh. Do your radiator hoses and freshen up your coolant when you install the rad, and then look at trans fluid. Yes, on an 18 year old vehicle the maintenance is seemingly never-ending.

I'd be interest in comparing notes with you once you're up and running on the Spartan, I installed an Aussie but was looking at all the lunchbox lockers. The carrier gasket is like $7 at AutoZone, btw.

Yeah, I drained and filled the trans fluid twice already. Might do it again in the next few weeks. I also just flushed the coolant system and then developed a very very small leak, but I got the Koyo super cheap on eBay and didn't want to deal with the leak. It's a weird leak.....only happens when it sits for 2-3 days. I should definitely buy the hoses, but I was being cheap when I bought the radiator lol.

I wish I has just done the tie rod ends when I did the lift. I only did them at all because they were frozen on the passenger side and when the guy went to do my alignment the ball popped out of the joint at the knuckle. Crazy. Also what makes me want to do the driver's side. I would have used OEM, but now I have an O-Reilly's ITRE and Duralast OTRE. Of well. They seem tight for now and I would not pay whatever ridiculous amount of money Toyota thinks their ITREs are worth.

I'm on Travis Air Force Base. In between Sac and San Fran.

1999 SR5 4X4, Manual, 142K, $8K in 2015

I looked at many 4runners and when I found this one I jumped on it. The 99 4Runner was garaged since new and his grandson (Honda Mechanic) did maintenance. What grandson wouldn't take great care of grandpa's truck? The truck was clean inside and out.

A guy bought this when he retired and had to sell because knew it was hurting his knee when he drove it.

Sold my '97 Limited with 260k miles for $6,500. Had lots of '99+ parts, and was in excellent shape.
$1k for my '01 SR5 with 220k miles.
Had a bad trans solenoid, and some light front end damage. And it was pretty filthy. I'm just guessing about the trans. It actually drove fine after I trailered it home from the trans shop. Trans shop told PO it was a "bad torque converter".

so strange, your 4R looks identical to mine when I bought it, even paid the same price! Mine is SR5, and I have since swapped wheels, but Nice Rig!

2000 SR5 4x4 owned by an elderly couple in California. Paid 9,000 and then had to put around $3,500 for new valve gasket and some other repairs. But she will last 400,000+ miles, and was worth every dime.

Here's my '97 Limited, 167K, original owner. Got it for $4750, very good for CA (others were in the $8-10K range). Very poor documentation on maintenance, so I am doing everything as if it had nothing done. But it's very solid and of course rust free (CA truck).

I never buy cars from these small used car dealers, but this one was unusual, it was the dealer's personal vehicle since new. He clearly did not do anything to clean it up before the sale, so I could see exactly what I was getting, warts and all.

So far I'm very happy with it, though I'm probably $1-2K into it, and haven't even started the fun (expensive) stuff yet.

-sport hood with silver insert and black grille screen
-replace front bumper with sport style color-matched silver bumper
-projector retrofit with color-matched silver shrouds and reflectors and 99 clear lenses
-satoshi grille with silver bezel and black grille screen
-seqoia rims, color matched to silver or stock and 255/85s
-lose the running boards
-eLocker rear end
