How much do you guys pay for your oil changes?

When the filter blows off or the plug falls out and your motor blows up you'll be wishing you'd have done your own work, I trust nobody but myself to work on my runner and ill have nobody but myself to blame if shtf.

Descent chance of that happening. But if it does then they get to pay for a new long block from Toyota, so that's not so bad. I wouldn't mind a new engine for free.

Guys I know DYI oil changes are nice and all, but if the dealer actually goes through the multipoint inspection, I think that in itself is worth paying someone else to do it.

At least for me its not easy for me to jack up the car safely without spending a little bit of time since i am on a gravel road. due to the age our cars its a good idea for every 6 months or year someone to do a quick check under the car on the lift for leaks or play in suspension (especially ball joints) . call me crazy but letting someone figure out ways to charge you could be a good thing providing you are there for service already...

I ended up doing the oil change myself, but a few months ago asked the dealer across the street how much they would charge if I brought in my own oil and filter, they said 25. not really the end of the world i guess.

I say this in the ideal world. I had a dealer do my oil change a while ago, (since it was nearly the same cost if I did it myself) they ended up overfilling it a bit. So I guess for us anal people keep doing it yourself, but jack up your car and check for play with a crow bar if you do decide to do your own oil.

one last thing. I called up another local toyota, their synthetic oil change service special was not toyota fluid (nor mobil1), so if the oil change price is low, verify you are getting oem filter and fluid or just go to walmart buy your own fluid and call it a day. I don't think there is a wrong answer here.


edit: to answer OP. I bought 2 gal of mobil 1 EP for 12 dollars each after rebate, and box of 5 oem filters for 25.
so about 30 bucks.

Multipoint inspection worth it. I had them give me $2000 quote to replace CV shafts for torn boots. Sway bar links and shocks because the paint was pitted. 2 year old OME shocks. These inspections are a joke. Lol.

I buy my oil at Wal-Mart and then instead of going home, I take it to the dealer to have it changed with a factory filter.

In fact, I just did this today.

$33.79 after tax for oil (One big jug and one single quart of Mobil 1 5-30).

$25.09 after tax for the oil change, filter, and crush washer thing. Looking at my receipt it looks like I wasn't charged for the filter which happens quite often. However, the dealer I went to today (lifts were not working at my normal dealer) I could actually watch them change it, and the filter was replaced. I think I'll go here from now on.

So grand total of $58.88.

I do this for a few reasons.

1. I am lazy

2. I don't care who you are, oil is messy

3. Disposing of oil is annoying

4. When I access my Toyota Owners account I have record of every single oil change I have ever had.

5. I actually like sitting in the dealership for an hour or so and watching mindless television while drinking free espresso.

So I have to ask Alex why you have no problem tackling one heck of a hard job of replacing heads on a 5vz but when it comes to changing oil you have someone else do the work for you? :noidea:

i have fumoto valves on my 4runner as well as Xterra, which makes oil change a breeze. I don't enjoy changing engine oil myself but don't trust dealerships to do a good job. I dislike cleaning drain pans and taking used oil for recycling. Can't justify it time wise but can sleep well knowing the job was done correctly.

I like the idea behind the fumoto valves but not on a 4runner. It just seems like something for a stick or rock to catch on to. Before you know it you have lost all your oil the fastest way possible...

Difference in our situations is I believe that I have one of the few honest dealership service shops around (Jim Norton Toyota in Tulsa). They've never told me anything needed replacing that didn't, up to and including showing me what and how was wrong, and even when something is recommended, they always offer a solid discount. At my 75k service, CV axle boots were slightly torn, like yours, but while they recommended the boot job, said it could honestly wait until the 100k service. So, I waited until then and had them do it. Not a job I would want to do, and like others, I would prefer to have them do it and be liable for their work, all while I do a crossword puzzle in the lobby, drink free coffee and stare at new Tacos and 4Runners. Is an oil change easy to DIY? Yes. Is it something I want to do myself? No, not anymore.

An armor front skid does a good job with protection but I am more so worried about failure or it releasing on it's own.

Your dealership is definitely an exception to the rule. Most are going to bend you over big time. Labor rates at my local dealership is $150/Hr. Now I make decent money as a firefighter but I can assure you it's nowhere near $150/hr. So, after I learned the hard way that even the "Supposed Expert Mechanics" at the dealerships make mistakes, like they did on my rear axle seals job, I'm choosing to never bring it back.

Yeah, how often does that happen? Maybe like 1 person I know said it happened to him like twenty years ago at a jiffy lube because of some dumbass kid.

The rest of the world pays to get their oil changed. I bet the rate of shit hitting the fan is pretty low.

But if getting underneath a vehicle and poking around at oily bits is assuring to you, then by all means keep it up. I used to do that, but I just don't feel like anymore. I'll be straight up and say I'm lazy too. I'd rather drink coffee and watch a professional do it. If he screws up, he pays, even though he never does because I trust him.

quite the action on this thread while I was away. interesting replies. my previous car it took me ~20 or so min to change the oil so yes I may go that route eventually with this.

I dropped it off at evan's tire last night (shop has 4 star on yelp, 100+ reviews + we've taken cars there before for tires) and they finished it this morning.

$17.10 out the door. seems TOO cheap, but we'll see! at least I can drive to Utah now! :cheers:

I didn't read a single negative feedback. Fumoto sells a plastic retainer clip that prevents accidental release. I have had it on my xterra for over 4 years and on 4runner for 2 years without any issues.

As long as it works then no worries at all. Just something extra I wouldn't take a chance with. Usually if something can go wrong it does, at least for myself.

Back to the thread, Ive never paid for an oil change. Ive lurked forums for years and those 10 pics Ive come across where the oil tech used an impact gun has scared me away. I'm being paranoid, one of these days I will have to pay to get it changed.

Mostly because of reasons 1-3. I do EVERYTHING else on my 4Runner, but an oil change is so cheap that I don't like bothering with it. I think it's a hassle; especially the clean up.

$38 with a coupon for a $21 car wash at the same place. I also run Maxlife.

Between changes I wash the truck myself but when they do it they wash the insides of the windows, the mats and everything while I sit and read the paper. I tip the guys and they know my truck so I always get a super nice job.

I think it ran me about $60-70. Do all my oils my self. That's when I switched from regular to synthetic. Running Castrol full synthetic ( without all those titanium and other stuff in it, regular castrol synthetic ) think the gallon was close to $40, then ofcourse Walmart didn't have a quart of that specific oil so I got one from autozone for $8-10. And a good filter made for synthetic oil. ( so they say ) Walmart is the place to get oil. Gallons are cheaper then auto parts store. But for some reason they don't have a quart of castrol regular synthetic. My old man always bust my balks about why I don't bring it into a shop. I have my reason. Only shop I'll bring it to is the shop that my friend who is a mechanic works at. And he works on cars outside his job.

It was actually cheaper for me to buy a second case of 5 quarts from walmart.

you can just use it on your next oil change. syn oil wont ever go bad on the shelf.

A Purolator or Supertech filter and Walmet Supertech Full Synthetic will set you back about $21-22. Nobody touches my vehicles unless I can't do the work.

My brother had a change done and they put in twice the oil required. And he didn't check the dipstick before he drove from DC to TN. 'Nuff said...
