How much gas can you fit in your 4runner..and how far can you go?

i know i really shouldn't do this..but i've gotten *almost* to 400 miles on a single tank of gas before. i didn't hop on the interstate during that time period..mostly 55mph and below driving around town. its amazing how far *BELOW* the bottom gas hash mark you can go. ;-)

i found pretty early on you can get right around 20 gallons in your tank. the stupid gas pump clicks off around 16 gallons and i shouldn't be topping it off, but i like to go as long as possible between filling station visits.

i get between 275-300 miles on a tank of gas doing 70+ mph interstate driving..but then again i'm not running it super-low either like in town.

a 'normal' tank of gas (in town and some interstate driving) generally gets me in the 300-325 range assuming i've topped it off at the station.

anyone get better mileage or range on a tank of gas?

ps i hate having to fill up with ethanol-diluted gas but its hard to find a station without ethanol and they're pretty expensive when you do find one.

that was a one-time thing lol. i should point that out..and it was accidental..i knew i was low but was zoned out thiinking about something and glanced down and noticed my gas needle BURIED in the dash.

interesting our tanks are 18.5 gallon. is that the official toyota line? am i getting ripped off by gas stations that show 20 gallons? or am i put 1.5 gallons too much in my tank?

keep in mind i have to be pretty empty to get 20 gallons in, but I manage to do it frequently (just have to be patient and go very slow with the pump once it clicks off)

oops is that a bad thing? i am used to the sound of the gas coming up the filler tube and usually can stop right before it gets to the top.

and yes, i put 20 gallons in it routinely. never thought much about it.

like i said..i am LOOOOW, but i know the needle can go beyond the bottom hashmark and i still have gas..if its below to the point its not touching the line anymore at all..then i get worried!

20 sounds high, but who knows I've gotten 16.5 in my Jetta that has a 14 gallon tank.

2wd limited with 190k, split 5s, at stock height my best tank was 330 with no light coming on before the refill.
With about 70/30 hwy/city

I usually can get a little more than 200 miles on a tank... I usually put about 16 gallons in I'm too afraid to try to push it to right at 18.5. Ive heard the gas meter doesn't pick up the last gallon or so in your tank.

I get around 340 miles a tank and fill it up until it clicks off at around 17 gallons so I average 20 miles a gallon and I drive in traffic everyday. I can get 50-60 miles once my gas light turns on. 60 is pushing it though.

i have a 5sp v6 1998 (built 9/97 in Japan) and my 'low fuel' light comes on WAAAAY early...like halfway between the 1/4 and 0 hashmarks. I can literally drive another 50-75 miles at least.

So I go by when the needle is on top of the bottom hashmark (or below it). As long as its 'touching' the hashmark I know I'm ok (at least i've never had a problem in 5 years of owning this car).

If the needle is COMPLETELY BELOW the bottom hashmark (not touching it at all) I know I need to hit a gas station ASAP.

When I fill up, I top off (I never put less than 18 gallons in EVER) so those who are seeing less mileage..maybe its because you're filling up early and not topping off...so you're "losing" mileage from 2 directions.

Last full I did was 340.0 miles (yes that I the real number when I filled it.) and the refill was 17.7 gallons of 88 octane. This equaled out to 19.2 mpg. Mind you 100 miles of this was hauling a d35 in the rear cargo and a queen with box spring on the roof cruising at 70 miles an hour. Most all other driving was at 65 to 75 with minimal in city driving.

Truck specs are:

Tires: 265/70r16
Tire pressure: 29 to 30 psi
Stock 4:10 gears
In 2wd the whole time.

Overfilling is a bad thing as when you fill it up into the filler neck there's no room for the gas to expand when it's gets warm and you force gas into the evaporative charcoal canister thus saturating it and ruining it and it's a bit of a pricey part to replace.

Just fill it up til it clicks once or twice and call it good. I do this and I might hit 16 gallons and my mom dioes the same with the same results with her '99 Limited. There is also a gallon or two of unuseable gas that would be left in the tank if you ran it "dry".

i dont disagree overfilling is a bad thing..i've been rolling the dice i guess since i typically 'overfill' 90% of the time i fill up.

as for the clicking, the gas sloshes around inside your tank quite a bit from the jet pressure of the pump nozzle. if you let it sit for about 45 seconds after it initially clicks and then pour slowly...you can easily get 2+ gallons in before it 'clicks' again.

i also dont put the fuel nozzle all the way in since the still moving gas in the tank causes it to click again almost instantly.

if you put your ear close after it clicks to your tank you can hear the gas 'wave' going back & forth in your tank.

again, not saying what i'm doing is a good thing..but i have never had a problem in the 5 years of putting 18+ gallons in every time i fill up.
