My best guess is right at 3 gal based on a few tests

Im assuming the way to test it to wait till light comes on, reset the trip odometer and drive it till empty with a gas can. Is it really true running out of gas completely harms the engine?

I know this may sound dumb to some people but why let your fuel run that low? I have never ran any vehicle I have low enough on fuel to trigger a low fuel warning.

I work as a traveling nurse/paramedic, one of my contracts is for Indian health service and have gas cans on truck but was wondering. We travel very far from gas stations. The difference in distance between empty and 4 gallons could be the difference between a hospital or a gas station.

Running out of gas is very bad. It hurts the fuel pump, because I read that the gas actually works to keep the temp of the fuel pump in an acceptable range, if there is no gas in the tank, the pump can overheat.

I do go pretty low sometimes so it seems kinda bad to say this, but i will anyway. In tank fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel. you're decreasing the life of the pump if you take it as far as you can.
