How much of a pita would it be to install stock steering wheel stereo controls?

Hi all,

I have an 04 sr5 with no steering wheel stereo controls. how much of a pain would it be to install the controls and how much do you think it would cost?

reason i ask is because i bought an f90bt, and its kind of annoying having to reach so far when scrolling through the radio...i'm used to a maxima where i could touch the screen and rest my arm on the stick. with the 4r, i feel like i'm holding my arm in the air for a while since the f90bt isnt the fasted navi under the sun...

ive never done it but i dont imagine it being that hard. but is it cost/time effective? prob not. you would need to replace the steering wheel im sure. i dont know if its pre-wired or not..if it is than you are set just swap out the steering wheel. but you also need to deal w airbags and a bunch of other junk. i wouldnt do it or even look into it to much

I just bought a pioneer CD player with a "P" in the model number.. that way it's compatible with this little item...

I was wondering this very same thing. I like the pioneer idea but I don't want to buy another head unit. The only thing I use it for MP3's. I just bought an iPod adapter for it.

if your T4R is like all of our T4R, and it is...most of the accessories come prewired just not preinstalled. That way either the port or the dealer can add additional accessories upon request wo having to add any additional wiring.

I would be willing to bet a small amount of cash that if you took the steering wheel apart, the wiring would already exist and you could go to the yotaship and buy the steering wheel controls and plug and play.

I was wondering the very same thing. I have a 2008 that has half the steering wheel controls there, just not the phone side. I talked to the dealership on Monday and they told me it isn't possible. I don't know if they are talking out there a** or what.

I added everything to my SR5 after I installed my OEM navigation system. I wanted to be able to use the voice inputs and bluetooth controls with the steering wheel controls. Wiring already exists, it is plug and play, but VERY expensive. I also added the leather wheel to complete the look (found one on eBay), but it's not necessary. Here are the parts that are needed:

Left switch: 84247-35010-B0
Right switch: 84244-35030-B0
Wire connecting two switches: 84204-58010
Airbag: 45130-35431-B0

I have an '06 Limited with factory JBL. I'm trying to hook up bluetooth and install switches on right side of steering wheel. The swithes for audio on left already exist. Will I have to replace the airbag to do this or just plug in new switches?

Any advice or thoughts would certainly help.

from my research you do not have to replace the airbag just the cover that goes over it. it seems that replacing the cover is really simple.. the only thing i am a bit fuzzy about is if the wiring for the audio controls already exists and if so it should be plug and play..

OK - I found a few great DIY posts that each contain installation pictures, diagrams part numbers and wiring instructions. All posts contain NAV instructions along with bluetooth. Loads of information...

Manufacturer and dealer markup on replacement parts, making it probably twice or three times as expensive if you were to order parts and assemble your own vehicle than buying it as a whole.

The steering wheel is prewired to a certain extent. The wiring from the headunit to the steering wheel is present, but the ribbon cable connecting the left to the right switches isn't there.

There are only two steering wheel covers/airbag assemblies for the 4Runner. One with the audio controls and one without. The one with the audio controls will have a blank cover on the right side. You should be able to remove that cover and replace it with the Bluetooth buttons.

Interesting that this is actually available. A member here, had the full airbag (no audio control) cover and cut part of it to add the switches. This would be a much cleaner option. Great find!
