How much water depth is safe for a stock rear differential?

I understand the rear differential lacks an extended breather and that I obviously shouldn't get water in my differential. That said, what is a safe depth of water to ford with a stock differential?

I may be driving through a place soon that may require crossing a small stream. It is about 1.5 feet at its deepest point. I am on 31" tires (265/75/16)

Water that's level is under the breather located at the top of the rear diff. Your answer really is that simple. Rocks or sand in the water can change that level in a heartbeat. Is it worth taking the chance?

If your worried about it extend it.
 
Extend the breather, it's the easiest mod there is. It took me 10-15min, quicker than changing your oil.
 
The diff breather is at the top of the axle pumpkin, which puts it above the centerline of your axle. So with 31" tires you'd be fine with 18" of water. If you're real concerned you can measure the height of the breather.

Contrary to the previous two guys, I don't think extending the breather is at all necessary unless you plan on spending significant time in water crossings. The stock breather is sufficient at keeping most water out, especially if it's just a small stream that you are driving through.

He also does a great job on walking you through the parts you need and just how to do it. It's a lot better to do, and not need, than to need, and NOT to have done. I think Abraham Lincoln said that... or maybe thought that.
