if they use loctite on them - hit the head with a soldering iron for a few seconds before trying to take them out

Warming up the loctite should make it easy to unscrew

JIS screwdriver needed

What looks like a Phillips head screw on 4Runners is actually JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard). Make sure you use a JIS screwdriver on them, a phillips screwdriver will strip them out.

I have same problem .... just drill out screw head with 5/16 drill and then when remove panel use wise grip to remove thread .... it works for me

Spot on! I stripped a couple of those screws in the past before I tried heat, it definitely helps.

I used my dremel w/ cutting wheel to cut a slot in the head and then used a monster flat head screwdriver to remove.

That was after breaking a drill bit trying to drill it out, and breaking an extractor trying to extract it.

Expensive screw.
