How to diagnose a rattle...

Whenever my rear axle goes over a decent-sized bump (e.g. speed bump, pothole, etc.), I hear a metallic rattle. As far as I can tell from up front, it sounds like it's originating from somewhere between the rear passenger door and the rear taillight.

I say "metallic" because it sounds very similar to the noise I hear from the latch on the rear seatback when it engages as I put the seatback from a folded to an upright position. But I have double-checked this and it is secure.

For many years, I really only heard this from the left side. Lately (last couple months) I have started hearing it from both sides.

I don't expect anyone here to be able to diagnose it without hearing it first-hand. I guess I'm wondering:

1. is there a known problem like this with the '98 T4R's?
2. has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?
3. does anyone have any pointers/suggestions for diagnosing?

My 2 rattles were in the rear and were the tailpipe and a broken rear shock, so no help there. Some People say to bang a tire with a rubber mallet and have a friend look under to see what is rattling. Hope this helps.

i had more of a clunk then a rattle. turns out it was my hitch bouncing in the receiver. I found by laying under there and banging on stuff. thats all i can suggest. good luck.
