How to: Disable DRL on your 3rd gen. (earlier models)

New to Gen3 ownership and the forum, just exploring the site and pertinent topics...do all models of the Gen3 come standard with DRL's? I've only had the truck about two months...base model 2WD 4cyl. No DRL...thanks.

Drl mod not working

I’ve got a 98 4runner and everytime I try to disable the drl by unplugging the connectors my headlights just won’t work at all. I’ve done it before on my 97 and it worked perfectly. But for some reason everytime I unplug this one the headlights don’t work at all after unplugging. Any help?

I just unplugged the grey 2 wire connector enough it wasn't making contact, filled it with dielectric grease, it's in front of the battery on my 97 sr5 and 99 LTD, no issues Canadian spec 4R, there is a steel grilled box right beside it for DRL's, it's the only connector floating in that space where the fender and rad support meet right at the bottom of the battery, easy pezy, both been like that for 14 and 8 years no issues, all functions work auto lights hi/lo and fogs on the 99.

Resurrecting this thread with a question:

Has anyone used the early 3rd gen DRL circuit to relocate DRLs to corner markers or aftermarket LEDs? Will this cause any problems?

I'm about to install a pair of BXBuilt projectors in my '97 4Runnerand I want to prolong the lifespan of these units by routing the DRL to another light source.

The previous owner of my second gen had rewired the lights so corner lights and tail lights were on whenever the ignition was on. Kind of a poor man's DRL mod, i guess.

For 01-02 years:

Just wanted to note for anyone this might help, another option is removing the white/green wire contact from the D8 daytime running light relay (pictured below). Just electrical tape over the contact (terminal) so it doesn't short anything but could be re-inserted into the relay connector if you wanted to easily re-enable the DRLs. Also make sure you pop the "lock" on the white connector before trying to pop the contact out with a tiny screwdriver on that white tab that grips the metal contact.

Why would this be useful?? I'm working on a project where I still need the DRL signal from the relay, but do not want my actual headlight DRLs turning on. To get that signal, I'll be tapping into the yellow wire (pin 3 of IG3, pictured below). The yellow wire goes to 12V when the parking brake is released (DRLs would turn on) or when the normal headlights are flicked on. This might be useful for making raptor lights or something similar turn on when your DRLs or headlights are normally supposed to turn on (obviously use an additional relay or something if you're gonna do that).

TLDR: Do this so your headlights still work (with Hi/Low) but normal DRLs don't turn on. You can still tap into the DRL signal to do other stuff like raptor lights.
