How to get better throttle response FOR FREE!

I need to do this to mine I figured it just needed a new throttle cable which the dealer quoted me $178 to replace and $78 to adjust if the cable was still good.

Just made these three cable adjustments. Throttle adjustment required a spray of Zep 45 first and the help of pliers to keep the cable from spinning while breaking the right nut loose. Drove it 'round the block and had great throttle response with more gas pedal than before.

How did I not think of this? I have been complaining about how much I have to press the pedal to get any response or get a downshift from the trans. It is so much more responsive and quicker to shift, however I would say the shifting feels "harder" or more noticeable. All in all a good thing to do especially on older worn out runners

I want to clarify that this isn't a "Mod". This is normal maintenance. In addition, it was written that most likely the pedal is bent and the cable is fine. This is a complete fallacy unless the truck has been in a bad accident or other event. Cables stretch a lot over time. This is one of the first things I check on every vehicle I buy. Every time you pull off the manifold or do any major work, these cables come off. As mentioned, adjusting tension is part of normal work/maintenance.
In addition, for everyone with an auto, you can actually tension the transmission cable for different responses. On my Taco I have this cable set through trial and error. Now...the downshifts are right on the money when I need the truck to get up and go. Even in normal traffic, I can downshift one and keep it there without really accelerating if I anticipate the need. Much like downshifting a manual. This does not hurt the transmission, it just appropriately sets the shift point. If you have it too tight, it will downshift to early. Too loose and it will hardly downshift. Drive it down the street, pull over, make your adjustment and try again. Within a few minutes you'll have it nailed.

Ok i just replaced my throttle cable because I broke the bolt doing this mod, however after replacing the cable I found out that adjusting the bolt dosnt do anything. The cable is still as long as it in no matter where the bolt is holding it at. All the bolt does is hold it in place so it dosnt do anything with throttle response .

Drove to Northern NM ~500 miles round trip, came home saw this thread, proceeded with cable tightening, then went on the same 500 mile trip. Damn! The thing really get's out of it's own way now. Driving through the canyon and passing cars was so much nicer.

Yes the cable is the same distance no matter what, but if the cable is loose it has to pull in that extra slack before it pulls the throttle. If it's tight it will pull instantly. It's like those go carts at mini golf places, there a bolt controlling how far you can push the pedal, but reach down and pull that cable and you're in business (until they kick you out) :driving:
