How to get better throttle response FOR FREE!

No need for two people. Keep the car idling so you know when you're at the point of over tightening the cable. A set of vice grips can be nice to have to keep the cable from rolling.

So glad I found this thread. Just did this last night and it really tightened up the gas pedal.
Only way this wouldn't give you better throttle response is if the cable has been previously tightened.

Just tightened my cables as described here. I don't see much of an improvement in the throttle response, I guess the play I had never bothered me so I don't see a difference.
Where the improvement is HUGE is in the cruise control functionality.
Before this fix, if I was driving at say 60 mph and set the cruise, as soon as I took my foot of the gas pedal, the speed would drop by about 4 mph before getting back up to 60. Or if I had the cruise already set to 60, and then sped up a bit to pass someone, and then got off the gas after passing, the speed would again drop by 4 mph before recovering. So I would pass someone but then my speed would drop as soon as I passed them, which is obviously dangerous.
After this fix, there is absolutely no speed drop when I get off the gas. The cruise control picks up exactly where it was set. This has been extremely satisfying, I can hardly believe that I put up with the previous behavior for so long.
And as others said, can't beat the cost of this mod

Whoops I made a mistake and snapped my transmission lockdown bolt, does anyone know a replacement part?

Yikes! How hard did you torque that sucker down? I can't seem to find a part number anywhere though.
If I remember correctly, one end connects to the throttle body and the other end connects inside the transmission to the valve body. I remember having to disconnect it when I removed my valve body.

So I just loosened the left one and it snapped asap they were corroded together lol. Fixed temporarily with zip ties

I replaced my throttle cable (not free mod)
over the past 18 years... of 3rd gen ownership... I have had the same thing happen now on each truck. I shot a quick vid of what happens to the throttle cable and IMO the throttle cable is not stretching at all. it's the rubber cushion they put under the foot pedal to smooth out the throttle response that goes bad.

I looked at mine, it was nothing like yours, but it's possible that the rubber thingie got permanently compressed over the years, I don't have a new one to compare it to side by side.
I agree that it's unlikely that a steel cable stretches, I think that other parts (plastic/rubber) take a permanent set. Regardless, the effect is the same, as is the solution (other than actually replacing the cable).

I didn't like how squishy my gas pedal had become and replaced the entire cable. It was $90, so not exactly cheap but was very simple to replace.

my 97 T-100 never had the rubber/plastic break down problem. both 3rd gen's I have owned have had the same failures. who knows I guess I'm just stomping on it!

I cannot find a throttle cable for my 02 t4r but, i did find one for a 97 should be the same lengths right?
