Yes actually it will. even though it has dbw, there is still a cable that runs to the throttle body, and even though it's electronicaly controled the cable can stretch over time, so you should tighten it up if it is.

i adjusted mine today. i got about a half inch on the adjustment bolt. this too all of about 30 seconds to do and now the throttle response is awsome thanks for the tip

I'm quite sure that 2001-2002 4Runner did have drive by wire. That's how the VSC system worked...by electronically limiting the throttle and therefore cutting power (this could not be done if there was a direct link between pedel and throttle). If you press the accelerator pedal with the engine off in 2001-2002 4Runners, you will notice that the cable link opens the butterfly only about 1/4 of the way (even if you floor it). The reason for this is that if the electronics ever failed, you could still limp to a safe place with that 1/4 turn of the butterfly using the cable link.

OK... Hopefully this will put the Drive By Wire debate to rest. Here is a link to the entire history of the 4Runner and this link takes you directly to the 2001 page where Toyota did in-fact introduce what they call ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System-intelligent) to the 4Runner, which is indeed DBW.Charlee78 said:

excuse my dumb question but in the picture specifying the different cables is that the same for a manual transmission?
You should only have two cables... one for the Throttle and another for the Cruise Control.

The ONLY use or explanation I have ever seen is that the FSM--in the Fuel System Chapter--recommends blowing out the internal passages in the throttle body as part of the cleaning process. The illustration clearly shows the air gun being applied to one of these capped nipples (with the cap off--duh).
So I'm saying they are clean-out ports for the throttle body until someone comes up with something better. (I have posted this before, and no one did).
By the way, on the same page, the FSM also recommends NOT cleaning the IAC (hole at the bottom at 6 o'clock) that so many recommend doing. I don't.
