How to Get "Check Engine" Codes

Hey Guys,

I'm a member with 2nd Gen 4runner, but I'm trying to help a friend with 97 Tacoma. She has a 4-cylinder with the "Check Engine" light on, and I don't know if there is a way to get the codes without taking it to a shop, i.e. changing leads in the fuse box or such. If it is possible, can someone please post the instructions, and if available a list of the codes as well? Thanks a bunch.

go to a local auto parts store and they will pull it for you. Post up on here when you get the code (it will be P0###) and I can look it up for you. Good luck!
