How to install roof rack crossbars

If I wanted to powdercoat (satin black) the two standard roof racks, would this write-up be a good way or the best way to remove them from the vehicle roof?

Thanks for the info in this thread...you guys are giving me too many ideas to spend $$! I was going to wait and see if we would really use the roof rack. Then I thought, we probably will on vacation and might be pissed I didn't add the cross bars before then. Don't want the wify mad! She probably doesn't even realizes it doesn't have them.... Dealer parts guy wanted $199! So I googled and best price I found was $124.95 so called the salesman that sold it to me and he price matched it. I should have made a stink about it when I purchased vehicle but again didn't think it a big deal. Not only matched but will have next day! Can't wait to try them on! Thanks again for the push!

They were installed on my truck when I got it and there was some wind noise. After I removed them, most of the wind noise was gone, however, I've never been positive that the bars had been properly installed in the first place. If one or both had been installed backwards, it would've created the noise. The only way to verify it would be to reinstall them and I'm too lazy.

I just added crossbars and remounted my Yakima Warrior Rack on top - noise? I really cannot tell a difference, even on the interstate. When I had my rack on my 4th Gen I could really tell but with the roof rack and bars further back I dont notice - .
Again, this is me as compared to my 4th gen. But I think I would have noticed a considerable difference between having and not having on my 2010.

Need pictures for insight. Also ordered from Sparks in Myrtle Beach. $102, and $14 for shipping is a lot less than local dealership!
Just traded a 2008 Grand Cherokee Laredo on an SR5 4Runner. Can't even begin to compare, GC only had 12K on it, felt like 42K. Everything about the fit and finish in the Toyota is superior, everything!

That's probably because they are all come in plain black ABS plastic. They have to be painted to match the vehicle. The 4 cyl ones are probably just not painted or they are painted black.

All worked great on my 2011 limited until the "roll" part to release the inner clips. Nothing epoxy can't fix .... :wow2: but could have been worse.

On the second removal, I slid a long take covered knifeblade back and popped off the tabs (inside tabs) easily. Once the outer tabs have been released, there is room to insert the blade (or screwdriver etc) against the inside of the rails down to the tabs. Actually the first one popped and the second one just let go.

No force needed at all. :trophy:

I have a 2010 Black Limited; supposed to pick up a pair of cross bars tomorrow of Kijiji. They're black and my side bars are silver...anyone have a picture of their truck with this combo?

I ordered the factory cross bars for my 2010 4Runner Toyota Part number
PT278-89100 cost $140 after tax 150.85 shipped over night to my dealer.

In order to install the bars they must slide in from the rear which requires the plastic end caps be removed.

The part is supposed to come with a nylon removal tool, which mine did not however a putty knife or small pry bar works I put tape on mine to prevent any scratches.

Push down and inward on the End cap and pry up on the outside where the small plastic tabs are.

After the tabs are off the outside edge push the endcap up and inward to rock the inside tabs off.

Once removed you can see how they are attached.

After removing both end caps simply slide the cross bars in from the back. I did not tighten the screws which attach the bar until after I had slide them forward to allow a little play while installing them.

Finished product.

Thanks for your instructions, were very helpful. In my case I used a small laundry clip to open the end caps. Because have the perfect form to introduce it below the edge and with a small pressure the cap was released.

I just installed the crossbars yesterday. I heated the end caps with a hair dryer, and used a paint can lid openner to pry under the edge and release the plastic tabs. It went very smooth thanks for the help.
