How to lock center diff?

On the fly is fine (preferred). Don't drive it on hard, dry surfaces with the center-diff locked. Dirt roads etc is fine but in general dry or wet pavement is NOT considered slick enough...

Thanks. That makes more sense. What about a very dry, hard dirt road? Does just being dirt mean there's enough slip possible to not bind up?

Hard packed, dry dirt may bind a little bit. It won't be enough to risk mechanical damage so yes, a hard, dry dirt road is fine. It may make it more difficult to disengage the lock.
If you did bind it a bit on a very dry dirt road you may have to make some shallow turns or stop and go D to R and back once or twice to complete the disengage cycle.

You can lock and unlock the center diff while stopped. If you do something stupid and get stuck and need it to get unstuck. Not that that I have ever done anything stupid :bravo:
If you are stopped and in D, but the center diff won't engage, switch the trans to N and then switch it back to D. You can also try the reverse gear. If it doesn't work the first time usually it does by the second. Just a future hint that may help somewhere down the trail.

Dirt road is fine -- you'll get plenty of tire slip on a dirt road.
