How to make spare chipped keys

Got a blank key off Amazon for $8. Just got it today. Took it to Ace Hardware and the girl there cut it for me no charge! Made my day. Easy to follow instructions. Worked for me on the second try. I think I took longer than the 35 seconds cus I was being over cautious. And now I have a spare key. Thanks @nicholachel for the easy to follow instructions.

Made 2 new keys per this thread, programming worked perfect. Had the dealer do it by vin and the first one didn't turn, then he made a regular door key by vin and that one worked fine. He then traced my freshly cut non working key with the dummy door key and wouldn't you know it, it worked fine after that. He then traced my second one off the door key and it worked perfectly as well!

Update: I confirmed that I have a valet key and you cannot make a dup chipped key from a valet key. I can have the dealer cut and program a master for $200+ or I can install a remote starter and use any cut key after starting car with the remote starter. I'm told the immobilizer is off after the car is started with the remote starter. I'm leaning towards the remote starter rather than getting a key from dealership.

I bought a blank key on Amazon for $9 (it didn't have the Toyota logo), got it cut for $3, and programmed it myself using the instructions in the OP and it works fine. Once you put the key in it's a little harder to turn the key back and forth to the ON position, but it's fine for a spare.

I wanted to both express my gratitude to [MENTION=74343]nicolachel[/MENTION] and share my experience in case it helps any others here. I followed the advice of some of the other posts on here and took my two blanks that I got here: New Uncut Blank Transponder Key for Toyota 4Runner FJ Cruiser Tundra Yaris Avalon Corolla (Chip #4D-67):Amazon:Automotive to a local Toyota dealership to have the key cut from the VIN. I called three places as I do not have a go-to dealer that is nearby, and after explaining that I just wanted to get the keys cut and not programmed to each place, I got three different prices to cut two keys: $20, $10, and $0. Since the $0 place was closest, it was a no-brainer. Since I was a little worried that there would be issues which is the main reason I bought two, I had them just do one of them to start. The key cut from the VIN looked right, but would not open my doors or turn in the ignition. I’m not sure if it’s the dealer’s equipment, or some type of buildup in the locksets. I decided to just have them copy my original and that worked. I followed the steps and it worked after the second time. Also, opening and closing the driver door as fast as possible seemed to do the trick. So, my advice is to buy at least two and see what works on your vehicle.

I just bought a key off ebay for $6.99 (uncut toyota ignition chip key replacement) and had it cut as Ace Hardware for $2. I programmed it using the instructions in the first post and it worked like a champ!

I have a 2007 4runner so I'd suspect it should work on a 2006 just fine.

I was going to order a few boy scout spares but it sounds like you can get a key cut at the dealership based off the VIN... who knew... cool!

Ok for $33 I got to Fobs and 2 keys.
Programed the Fobs in 5 minutes (easy).
Went to Home Depot (because most places wont cut them unless they sell you them) and they cut it for free by the machine (Home Depot only charges for the key cutting is free)
So I came home and cleared the memory and programed one key as in the directions and then the second one took three tries but it's done, easy job.
The only thing is the keys only work in one direction in the ignition, it has to do with how it was cut. but no big deal if it wont turn I just flip it over and it works fine.

Procedure programmed the chip key first shot,,
New key, $10.

Anyone know if it would be the same procedure on a '10 Corolla?

5th Gen Replacement Key - Thread resurrection

Just thought I would give a fresh update on what I did for replacement keys for my 2011 SR5 Runner.
1. Ordered aftermarket 3-button keys on eBay - two for $35.98
2. Took keys to dealership - they were unsure they would work since they weren't there's but they quoted me $107 to cut and program both.

They worked perfectly and the dealership even cut me a valet key at no charge. The key blank from the dealership was $190 before the cut/program fee. So all in for basically $150 for two extra keys and a valet key.

I have the same year/model as you. Mine doesn't have an immobilizer light either, but the procedure worked just fine. Took me a couple tries because, without the light you're flying blind a bit, but I got it done. $13 for two keys from ebay, $5 to a locksmith to cut them, 20 minutes to program them, all done.

I bought a replacement chipped key off Amazon and had a locksmith cut the key (Amazon.com: KeylessOption 2 Item Bundle 1 Key Fob Keyless Entry Remote For HYQ12BBX Plus 1 Uncut Ignition Key: Automotive). Before I tried programming the replacement key, I tried to use it to manually open the doors, but it didn't work. It also would not turn in the ignition. Thinking that it might turn once programmed, I tried programming the key, but it still won't turn. Did the locksmith not cut it correctly? It seems to me that if the key were cut correctly, even if not programmed, should at least cycle the door locks. Has anyone else had this problem?

It sounds like it wasn't cut correctly. When you use a key that is physically the right dimensions but not programmed, the engine just cranks and cranks but never catches.

I just bought a used 2004 that only came with a grey valet key. I called the dealerships and they all want over $200 to reseed the immobilized and to program me a new master. I know I'm pretty much out of luck and need the dealer to do this, but I have a question. If I have them make me a new master after reseeding my immobilizer, will my current valet key continue to work? Also will any keys that I then program with the master then also be "master" keys capable of programming more spares?
